On the anniversary of the Nordstream underwater pipeline explosion, we blow the lid off the EU’s hypocrisy

Yesterday the EU published a statement of such hypocrisy and duplicity that even the Brexit Facts4EU.Org think-tank team were astonished. Our overnight analysis – using the EU’s own figures - proves that the EU has massively INCREASED its purchases of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Putin’s Russia since his second illegal invasion of Ukraine.

In addition we show how the EU’s purchases have continued to increase this year (2023), despite the mounting evidence of Putin’s war crimes and a series of ‘sanctions packages’ which the EU Commission has proudly been announcing every couple of months.

Today, on the anniversary of the Nordstream underwater gas pipelines explosions, the Brexit Facts4EU.Org think-tank team blows the lid off the EU’s hypocrisy using the EU’s own data.

The EU taketh away, and the EU giveth back

The EU’s statement yesterday tries to imply reduced purchases from Russia. It refers to the supply of energy products and focuses on just two of these: petroleum oils and natural gas.

At 1am one year ago today, an underwater explosion registered in seismic monitoring stations in northern Europe. The supply of natural gas to Germany via Russia’s Nordstream I and Nordstream II pipelines was immediately disrupted. It is therefore hardly surprising that supplies of natural gas from Russia in its gaseous state have fallen.

Conveniently the EU fails to mention Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) until the end of its statement, and even then it omits to mention the extraordinary 35% increase in the volumes of this product that the EU27 are now buying from Russia.

Here is what the EU said yesterday

Despite the evidence above, collated by Brexit Facts4EU.Org overnight using the EU’s own official data, below is what the EU had to say yesterday.

“In terms of net mass, Russia's shares in the EU imports of petroleum oils and natural gas have been decreasing continuously over time since the second quarter of 2022. Petroleum oils imports from Russia fell from a monthly average of 8.7 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2022 to 1.6 million tonnes in the second quarter of this year (-82%), but, in contrast, the imports from the extra-EU partners except Russia increased by 5.8 million tonnes, from 31.5 million to 37.3 million tonnes.

“Russia's share in total EU imports of petroleum oils was 4.0% in the second quarter of 2023, a staggering difference from the 21.6% share recorded in the same quarter of last year.”

After 12 sets of EU ‘sanctions packages’, why isn’t this trade illegal?

As readers can see, yesterday the EU continued to pump out its propaganda about the reduction in its supplies of energy products from Russia, following Putin’s second illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. His first illegal invasion (of Ukraine’s Crimea) took place in 2014.

Cutting through the propaganda, Russia remains the second-largest supplier in the World to the EU for its supplies of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) – and these EU purchases are growing fast.

Observations

It is now 18 months since President Putin launched his latest and most deadly illegal invasion of Ukraine. In that time the EU has talked big but has been very slow to deliver on effective sanctions.

As we have reported many times, the independent United Kingdom acted immediately.

Whilst the EU’s imports of petroleum fuels have decreased, it has actually increased its imports of Russian LNG to compensate.

These decisions are still made at national level in the absence of EU-led sanctions – and the EU has yet to ban the imports of Russian LNG. EU countries are therefore able to continue funding Putin’s Russia, 18 months since the war started, and are buying up Russia’s LNG at ever increasing rates.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily. However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.
