As Facts4EU keeps reporting, the EU has been shrinking in importance to the UK for years

On Friday (12 May 2023) the House of Commons Library research department issued an official report on UK-EU trade. In 2022, the UK exported £340 billion of goods and services to the EU, 42% of total UK exports. The UK imported £432 billion from the EU, 48% of total UK imports.

The UK had a trade deficit of £92 billion with the EU compared to a £5 billion surplus with non-EU countries.

In 2022 total UK exports (goods and services combined) to both the EU and non-EU countries were higher than pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Facts4EU has reported on this issue many times based on ONS data, but we hope that this report based on the HoC Library report might wake up some MPs to the trend in trade – and it’s not in the direction of the EU.

Last year the UK had a trade deficit of £92 billion with the EU compared to a £5 billion surplus with non-EU countries.

Every time we publish our research on trade we are accused by Remainer-Rejoiners of “fake news”, even though we use official sources. Perhaps today they will finally have to accept the facts, as we are basing today’s report on the official information given to all MPs, including those who would take us back into the EU.

We must get reports like this out there

Detail in the document and uk trade with rest of the world exposes some issues with Brexit.

The level of trade that NI has with the EI/Ireland is high, Brexit has effectively put a barrier between GB and NI which will push Ireland toward unification. The UK currently has a significant trade surplus with Ireland because of NI.

Trade deficit with Germany is highest in EU, but German car makers did not influence Brexit negotiations.

UK has a £40bn trade deficit with China, due to growth in China over the last 20 years which coincides with the fall in EU trade, but there will not be a trade deal with China or China joining CPTTP any time soon due to human rights issues.

UK/EU deficit is highest in 2022 because there are trade barriers for exports to EU but not for imports. When these come we will see the true effects of Brexit in shopping baskets.

“There is no evidence of growing support for Northern Ireland leaving the United Kingdom. Indeed, every major poll points in the opposite direction.”
Tracking all major polls since November 2017 reveals no significant trend, up or down, in support for Irish unity.

Religion still has a significant influence in NI. When NI was created Protestants outnumbered Catholics by 2 to 1. There are now more Catholics than Protestants and that will continue to increase. But if the Unionists continue to obstruct politics they will lose the trust of many in NI. Unification may be a generation away as the Troubles are still in living memory but there is now a generation born since the Troubles ended. UK leaving the EU and singe market and Ireland still in will push NI away from GB and toward the EU, Northern Ireland leaving the UK will be a tangible result of Brexit.
If UK was still in the single market the issue of borders would not have arisen. NI was not considered in Brexit, Farage even said in the last year that Ireland should leave the EU, that has been his only solution.

The Cons have made such a mess of the last few years that we are going to end up with a Labour Govt, probably with some sort of coalition and probably for the next two or three terms. I can't see Labour resisting calls for a referendum in Ireland.

Hence why Brussels was bluffing it was always going to agree to a trade deal even if the UK did not sign a WA stupid remainers feel for it by tying government hand with the surrender act (Benn Act)

Faced with the evidence of the EU's falling importance in UK trade. Sparky predictably changes the subject to a vague claim about NI, which represents about one percent of total UK trade. NI is useful to remainers as an emotional issue, but it is not economically a very big issue.
What is a big issue is how trade is to take account of the UK's economic advantages and non-advantages. The UK is a country with high wage levels, so it is not likely that we can compete effectively in low-tech labour intensive trade. Banging on about fruit-pickers or fishermen is how remainers distract attention towards visible and emotional, but not economically significant issues.
The UK's big advantages are in having a well educated workforce and good national infrastructure for the production of higher-tech goods and services. The prime export markets for these lie outside the EU and those markets are growing strongly, unlike the EU itself.
This debate4 will resolve itself. Companies will switch their attention to markets which allow them to expand their output profitably and they will not worry about nostalgia for the EU. Companies that fail to switch will gradually decline in competitiveness and profitability. and will lose investment and market share.
The basic propaganda trick here is to get you worrying about how Brexit does or does not affect access to the EU when access to the EU is itself a wasting asset.
