Brexit Britain increases its sales to the (non-EU) rest of the world

And we’re buying less from the EU, according to the latest official figures

Facts4EU summarises yesterday’s positive trade report from the Office for National Statistics

Yesterday’s report from the ONS on the UK’s international trade once again made for interesting reading, although Rejoiners certainly will not like it.

In contrast to the continual narrative from the Rejoin campaigners putting down the prospects of Brexit Britain, the UK exported more to the rest of the world and less to the EU – and bought less from the EU. And the trade balance got stronger once again.

The US is by far our biggest customer

For years the British public has been told that exports to EU countries are essential, as if trade with non-EU countries was near-impossible.

In fact the United States has always been the UK’s major trading partner. In April we sold 70% more to the US than to Germany – the EU’s largest economy by far.

Observations

Let's salute our exporters

As an independent trading nation with a global reputation, exports matter to Brexit Britain. Apart from securing jobs they improve our balance of payments which impacts positively on the value of sterling and reduces our costs of borrowing.

For decades the United Kingdom has been a services-driven economy and as regular readers know very well from our reports over the past seven years the EU Commission has admitted that “the Single Market does not work for services”.

There may be a lot that needs fixing in the UK, (as there is in most other countries), but at least our businesses are flourishing out there in the great wide world.

And we don’t need to become part of an EU superstate to achieve this.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily. However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.
