Queen Elizabeth reigned for 70 years – How do the Heads of State of EU countries measure up?

All readers will know that our deeply mourned Queen Elizabeth II was Head of State – and the United Kingdom’s Monarch – for over 70 years. Given that much has been made of the stability this afforded the United Kingdom, Facts4EU.Org is providing a comparison with the 27 countries of the European Union.

In the analysis below we look solely at Heads of State – NOT Prime Ministers. In most European countries Heads of State are Presidents. With some exceptions (notably France’s President Macron) the Head of State does not act as Head of Government.

Monarchies in the EU

There are five monarchs, one Grand Duke, and 21 Presidents serving as Heads of State in the EU’s 27 countries. Their powers vary considerably.

Of the Kings and Queens, the nordic countries of Denmark and Sweden stand out. No other monarchs make it into double digits. This makes the achievement of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II all the more remarkable.

Observations

The United Kingdom’s Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, is naturally the newest incumbent on a throne in Europe.

He is, however, the embodiment of a grand tradition of continuity and stability going back for centuries. We find it interesting that two other European countries which can lay claim to similar traditions as constitutional monarchies have also enjoyed political and democratic stability.

Yesterday we started to see the ceremonies and pageantry for which the United Kingdom is renowned throughout the world. Some might find these archaic but we think they are magnificent.

When these are combined with the “Royal walkabouts” we witnessed, a very positive message is sent to the World. In our monitoring of world media we continue to see the United Kingdom dominating the headlines.

There will be calls for a Republic in the not too distant future I am not talking about Scotland as I cannot see independence ever happening the young generation are not in favour of the monarchy there is no one in Parliament currently that is suitable to be a potential UK President Truss Starmer and Davey may not be in office for long and I am sceptical if they would be up to the job

The idea of an elected head of state looks somewhat unwise to me. An elected head is by its very nature a political appointment, and a head of state should be independent of politics. That way, their sole purpose can be to represent all in our society, not just a sector. I see no problem with the monarchy carrying on as, mainly thanks to the Queen, it understands its purpose and role and fulfills that with majesty. The Prime Minister can do the politics, the monarchy can display our inherent pride in being British.

I’m not really sure why the article was published, I’m very much a royalist but this article did no service to this site it’s more an advertising for willy waving than anything remotely about Brexit and I think disrespectful towards Her Majesty and her splendid service to the UK and it’s territories and the Commonwealth

This is not me personally calling for a Republic I am not the biggest Royalist but I am not as disrespectful to the Monarchy as the Jeremy Corbyn or Keir Starmer's of this world but I do see a Republic in my lifetime, and Charles is very WEF
