Price of food at EU supermarkets now set to rocket – much worse than in the UK

Strangely, no-one is blaming this on Brexit and the BBC isn’t even mentioning the EU's problems

Exclusive: Millions in the EU are now facing prohibitive food shopping bills.

On Friday last week, the European Commission’s official statistics agency released its latest figures on the soaring prices for food production and outputs in the EU. These rising prices are of such magnitude that their impact will become even more severe for EU citizens’ supermarket shopping bills than they already are.

To put UK inflation into context, Facts4EU.Org is providing readers with a summary of how much worse things are becoming across the Channel.

Why is this happening to the EU?

The increases have been driven by Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in two major ways:

Higher energy prices have affected food producers, just like the EU’s economies as a whole, and
Russia and Ukraine had been major exporters of grains, wheat, maize, oilseeds (particularly sunflowers) and fertilisers until the war started

These two factors are now playing into the food chain for EU consumers.

The EU’s high average increases mask crisis-level increases in some EU countries

Inevitably, looking at EU27 averages does not reveal the massive problems hitting certain EU countries which are now at crisis levels.

The sharpest rates of increase in the average price of agricultural output over this period were observed in Lithuania (+65%), Estonia (+53%) and Hungary (+43%). In each case these are many times the UK level.

However, it is not only ‘outlier’ EU countries which are being hit. The average hikes in food output prices in the EU’s top 3 economies are also well above UK levels. Germany : +30.3%, France : +27.7%. Italy : +23.4%. As shown above, the UK is on +16.5%.

Observations

To all those who look at rising prices in the UK and automatically blame Brexit, (as they do for everything), we politely suggest they turn their eyes to their beloved continent across the English Channel.

In our report above we have shown how the situation in the EU is far, far worse than it is in the independent United Kingdom. On every measure we looked at, the EU’s food price inflation is higher than in the UK – and in most cases dramatically higher.

Rebutting the Rejoiners

One of several standard responses from Rejoiners on social media when Facts4EU.Org publishes official data from the EU is “Why talk about the EU? Didn’t you know we’ve left?” They trot this out when the UK compares much more favourably to the wannabe empire they want us to re-join.

The simple answer to these people asking “Why talk about the EU?” is “Because that’s all you talk about.” It may be uncomfortable for Rejoiners to have to confront reality but we present official facts, not bland, meaningless slogans backed by no facts whatsoever.

Without massively underfunded organisations such as Facts4EU.Org, CIBUK.Org, and others, the British public would get a relentless diet of negativism about the UK and could easily form the impression that we would be better off back in the EU.

In 2016 we defeated all the odds, (and the ‘experts’, pollsters, and the Establishment), and eventually achieved quasi-independence for the United Kingdom despite the efforts of Theresa May and her government to water it down to nothing. Yes, we still have a long way to go to achieve full independence and sovereignty, but we’re on our way.

It is now up to all of us to defend Brexit. If we don’t, we may lose it.

In spite of the facts, Rejoiners are still working to bring down an elected government with the sole aim of taking us back in to the EU. Only next time, if they get their way, we will lose the Pound. The Euro will be our currency. The EU will further strip away our ability to be self sustaining to ensure we can never break away again. We will become like Greece, entirely dependent on the EU's mercy and benevolence. We've seen how that played out during the pandemic.

Just returned from France, a country I love, but a cauliflower is between €3 and €4.50.
Just bought one in UK for 90p.
All food is expensive now in France.

The percentages quoted are food output prices.
Consumer food price inflation for 12 months to Aug for EU27 is 10.1% (ranging from Estonia 25.2% to France 6.6%), for the UK 13.1%. These are frightening levels and the EU countries with the highest levels tend to be those furthest East.
Brexit is not working, we will only start to make it work when this is accepted and action taken to mitigate the issues. Going back into the EU is a non starter, we will never have a deal as good as the one we had before we left.

90p Mark! (5) Bought excellent one yesterday, 89p. But surely, this can’t be true in light of comments elsewhere this week from our resident Brexit expert who no doubt feels all is well with the world and particularly with the EU. It seems many members disagree & are not very happy with, e.g., Germany’s looking after its own with the Eur 200 bn energy subsidy spend and the lack of solidarity with the other 26. Cue reprimands from the Commission, other EU leaders, officials and sundry other hangers on. Further moves are afoot on the EU's illegal immigration issues too which we keep reading about but more recently two EU member states Austria & Hungary, cooperating with Serbia. All the while the rules continue to be wangled. (6) Yes Sparky we know we left & we know where the weaknesses lie & all the reasons why. Nobody is denying they exist. As was said elsewhere by Facts4eu, there is no wish, by most, to see the EU fail & wish it well. We are still part of Europe if not the EU and what happens there has effects globally so it's good to be kept up to date on certain issues which we may not have the time or the inclination to investigate ourselves.

Why wouldn’t you want the euro as our currency? The pound is rubbish. It’s worth nothing bad has the picture of an old dead woman on it - soon to be replaced by the mugshot of an elderly man who most of us don’t like very much.
What a useless currency.
The day we finally pay the elderly Brexitists their pensions in euros will be a great day. It might give them the opportunity to stop banging on about decimalisation for the first time in 50 years.

Everything seems to be based around London & the South. Regarding the rise in prices of food. There are stores reducing prices in the North of the Country. Aldi are one of them. Asda are selling Essential products at a far cheaper rate on lots of their products. Home Bargains have a lot of low priced daily used items. Farm foods sell lots of frozen food & other products at a very reasonable rate. & if you are a Tesco card holder their are a lot of money off products by using your card at the till.& the foods I refer to are what families use every day. Morrison’s seems to be the one that put their prices up on lots of their products.
