The Falklands War – 40th anniversary of liberation by UK forces

The United Kingdom has a proud tradition of standing up to dictatorial regimes

A short Facts4EU.Org tribute to our forces and what they did to uphold democratic values

40 years ago today, the Argentinian forces of the military junta then running Argentina surrendered to the British forces who had travelled many thousands of miles in a Royal Navy task force to liberate British people whose land had been illegally invaded.

In a stark echo from history, the remembrance of the sacrifices made by the United Kingdom in standing up for the rule of international law and the fundamental concept of the self-determination of peoples now resonates with Putin’s illegal war today in Europe.

Facts4EU.Org offers some brief reminders of the events 40 years ago. Sadly, our desperate lack of resources mean that we cannot offer a more complete report.

40 years ago, the United Kingdom reasserted democratic values, for the entire world to see

Following the dictatorial Argentinian military regime’s illegal invasion of the Falkland Islands on 02 April 1982, the British Government of Margaret Thatcher, backed by the entire House of Commons, sent a task force to take back this British sovereign territory.

After the war was over on 14 June 1982, following a magnificent victory which surprised almost the entire world, 255 British military personnel never came home, and many thousands more returned home but were scarred for life by their experiences. In addition, we remember the three Falkland Islanders who were killed during the hostilities.

The capability, determination, and bravery of the British forces simply cannot be overstated.

Sadly Facts4EU.Org’s resources today do not allow us to pay our full respect to the British armed forces who took part in this significant world event 40 years ago.

We do wish to say two things which are highly relevant today, however

Firstly, dictators cannot be reasoned with. Like all bullies they only understand force and power.

Secondly, the United Kingdom has a proud tradition of standing up to dictators and upholding international law. Without this, the Swastika might well be flying across the EU right now.

As the unelected EU Commissioners consider their response to the Government’s new Northern Ireland Bill announced yesterday, they might do well to remember this.

To all those involved in the Falklands War itself, and to all family members who were affected by its aftermath, we offer our sincere gratitude.
