Our analysis of the UN population growths and forecasts for the UK, the EU, and the World

According to the United Nations, the UK accounts for just 0.65% of the world’s population. The UK represents nothing more than a rounding error in the UN’s global population numbers.

The world’s population officially exceeded 8 billion this year. The UK’s population is set to peak in around 30 years’ time, if the UN data is to be believed. A further 30 years after the UK’s peak the world’s population is expected to reach 10.4 billion and then start falling.

Every two years the United Nations produces its forecasts of world population, demography and trends. Facts4EU.Org has analysed the historic data from 1950 through to the forecasts until the end of this century, to bring readers some insights into a topic which affects us all.

The World’s population growth is not coming from the UK or Europe

Europe (including the UK) is experiencing declining fertility rates. What the global numbers do not show is the extraordinary difference between birth rates in Europe and the birth rates in African countries.

And finally, let’s mention our Commonwealth friends, India

The UN predicts that India will officially become the most populous country in the world next year (2023), overtaking China.

Furthermore, in 40 years’ time (2062) the UN predicts that India will be by far the largest country in the world, with a population of 1.7bn. This compares with a prediction for China of ‘only’ 1.18bn.

Observations

The UN’s forecasts on population are about as accurate as the economic forecasts of organisations such as HM Treasury, the Bank of England, the Office for Budget Responsibility, the OECD and the IMF.

In the previous report the UN issued which we looked at in 2019 showed that by the turn of this century the global population would reach 10.9 billion and would still be climbing. Now it is forecasting a peak in 2086 at just over 10.4 billion people.

It should be noted that the UN’s data varies enormously across three scenarios based on assumptions of fertility: ‘Low’, ‘Medium’, and ‘High’. In our data above we have used the ‘Medium’ scenario.

The UN data takes no account of any changes in immigration

Looking at their numbers the question must be asked: "If the UK's population is set to peak in 2055, are they saying they will allow the UK to change its immigration policies?

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily.

However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.
