PLUS - The scariest real chart on soaring domestic energy prices you will see?

Never one to be shy about making statements extolling the virtues of the EU, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has remained silent about Brexit Britain sending its gas to the EU to help it out of its energy crisis.

Yesterday the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) released its latest suite of detailed information about energy trends. Facts4EU.Org’s analysis shows two things:

  1. The increase in the amount of gas which the UK is sending to the EU, and
  2. The real rise in UK consumer prices for the different forms of energy we use

1. Brexit Britain helps out the EU, with no thanks from Ursula von der Leyen

The UK has the second largest re-gasification infrastructure for Liquefied National Gas (LNG) in Europe. As a result, the UK played a key role in supplying gas to the EU in quarter 1 2022.

“Gas exports [from the UK] to the EU more than doubled in Q1 2022, as interconnectors with Belgium and the Netherlands were used to export gas to mainland Europe.”

- UK Dept for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), 25 Aug 2022

The EU’s heavy reliance on Russian gas has created major problems and rifts across the EU. Whereas the UK has LNG terminals, the EU’s largest user of energy – Germany – has none. The Germans are now scrambling to construct two offshore LNG terminals but these are unlikely to be ready before next year.

In the interim, Germany has to rely on piped gas. With Russia having cut its NordStream 1 supply to the EU to 20% of normal – and at times cutting the supply altogether - Germany and other EU countries are in deep trouble.

2. The consumer price index for energy in the UK

Yesterday the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) released its latest domestic energy price indices for the various types of fuel, in current and real terms. Our analysis and chart shows just how worried we should all be.

The figures are all expressed in real terms, i.e. adjusted for inflation.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

Consumer price indices for energy, Q1 2022 compared with Q1 2021

  • Consumer price index for all domestic fuels increased by 21%
  • Domestic electricity prices increased by 17%
  • Domestic gas prices increased by 26%

The chart below is more up to date. It shows the five years from June 2017 to June 2022. Once again, these indices have been adjusted for inflation.

3. Driven crazy by the cost of filling up?

In the three months to June 2022, road fuels have continued to increase in price and have reached record highs. The average retail price of petrol for June 2022 was 183 pence per litre, an increase of 13% in just three months.

The average retail diesel price was 190 pence per litre, up 11% on March 2022.

Observations

On the morning of the EU Referendum result over six years ago, the then EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker gave his response:

“This will not be an amicable divorce.”

He was right – but only because the EU aparachiks chose to adopt this hostile approach and have continued it to this day. By contrast the UK has been completely reasonable.

Above we have revealed that the UK more than doubled its supply of gas to the EU in the first quarter of this year. Make no mistake, the EU is in some serious trouble over the security of its energy supplies, mostly thanks to the ill-advised policies of Merkel’s Germany in cosying up to Putin’s Russia and becoming seriously over-reliant on that rogue state.

The UK Government could have acted as vindictively as the Commission has acted to the UK and decined to provide any gas. But then that would not be the British way. Naturally the gas is being sold, not donated, but the UK is nonetheless proving to be a reliable partner, as usual.

Domestic energy costs

When it comes to domestic energy costs in the UK, we have chosen to provide the real costs, allowing for inflation. Had we chosen to publish ‘current costs’, the picture would look even worse.

As it is, our chart above shows just how serious the problem is. It may be worse in the EU (and it is) but it’s clear that the new Truss administration will have to get serious very quickly in its approach to a move to self-sufficiency in energy for the UK.
