In HMRC’s latest release on international trade, they reported that UK goods exports hit their highest-ever level in the second quarter of this year.

On Friday (12 Aug 2022) the HMRC, the Office for National Statistics, and the Government, released sets of data about the UK’s trade performance in the first half of 2022. In this report we don’t just look at the export volumes, as we’ve done that many times before. Instead we focus on what Brexit Britain seems to be good at selling. The results of our analysis may surprise you.

The UK still makes things – it’s not all about services

With the UK’s services sector making up around 80% of the economy it’s easy to ignore the UK’s goods and manufacturing sector.

When it comes to services the UK has a positive trade balance. With the goods trade, however, we import more than we export. Nevertheless the UK is still exporting a sizeable and growing amount of merchandise - to the EU and around the world.

What type of goods does the EU buy from us?

HMRC divides products into 99 groupings. In the tables that follow we are showing the Top 20 in each case. We have also shortened the descriptions to make these easier to read.

Export volumes in Q2 2022 at their highest-ever level

Whilst this report focuses on the nature of goods which the UK exports to the EU and to the rest of the world, we must end with some news which may surprise many readers.

Despite everything, Brexit Britain’s total goods exports in the last quarter (Apr-Jun 2022) reached just under £100bn (£99.8bn). This is the highest level on record.

The USA remains by far and away the biggest customer for the UK’s goods, as well as for its services.

Observations

Oh no, not another positive report about Brexit Britain?

Afraid so. Once again Facts4EU.Org on behalf of the ‘Rebuttal Unit’ of CIBUK is forced to present facts which counter the relentless negativity we all hear continuously from the Remainer-dominated Establishment.

So good to read that Boris’ Brexit deal is starting to pay-off. Millions took the leap of faith to vote for Boris in 2019 … despite all the project fear mongering from the remainers.

Looks like another failure for project fear how will Lord Adonis and the rejoiners faction explain this, actually they seem to have moved from trade to there latest childish grievance is having to pay a few euros to go on holiday

Number 1 on the UK/EU export list is mineral fuels and oils.
In other words the gas we are importing from Qatar and then supplying to Germany is included in the figures.
I don't even know if we make a profit on that item of trade? Maybe we are doing out of the goodness of our hearts and we pass it on at cost price? I really don't know.

4. KB. No, exporting fuels and oils does not automatically mean that this is imported from Quatar. There is a lot of processing involved in handling fuels and petrochemicals and exporting goods that contain partly import is what everyone does.
If you are going to play the game of "You can't count this, you can't count that" you have to do it consistently across all countries. There are plenty of countries that export fuels and oils. Germany imports gas from Russia and exports it to Eastern Europe, but I don't hear anyone calling for German exports to be belittled. Are exporting countries all supposed to subtract fuels and oil from their exports, or is it just a game we play with UK exports?
By the way, why does this remind me of Ed Miliband and "The wrong kind of growth"?

If Brexit was done right and complete, we would be doing even better.
Keep pushing on and call out all those that do the UK down.

4. I agree, the ONS figures for EU exports in Dec '21 are far less, reflecting that this is indeed mostly due to re-routing LNG.
I'm not sure about prices or profit margins but what's more important is how long we can rely on this trade.
5. Count trade in the period in which it is conducted, but how many more times can we count on it?
What can or can't be counted is irrelevant if it is a short-term gain in a sector where 20 year supply deals are routine.
Germany has already negotiated long-term deals while building it's storage tanks. The 1st delivery direct from Qatar is expected in 2024.
Meanwhile, the US, which became the largest LNG exporter in the world in the 1st half of this year, is set to export 3/4 of it's supply to Europe.
This year, 71% of it's supply came to the EU & the UK.
So while this is welcome trade, we cannot bank the future on it. 2-3 years, with luck.

Yes, the record exports to the EU touted on this website are because of the Ukraine war. LNG is going through the UK to the EU to make up for the shortfall due to sanctions against Russia. It is not because we are doing great since Brexit. It's just that we have more facilities for handling LNG. The EU have been building them hand over fist since the invasion so needing our facilities won't last long. They're grasping at straws and they know it.
