Only 10 British individual movie projects received EU grants since 2013, out of 275

Yesterday in Brussels, the EU blew its own trumpet again, this time announcing a celebration for 30 years of subsidising the media industry in the EU and outside the EU.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org screened the latest data available on the EU Commission’s grants to film-makers
The results were explosive, if a little predictable

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

How the EU put the UK movie industry in the back row of the cinema

  • Out of 275 grants for individual movies, the UK was awarded only 10
  • The UK barely scraped into the top 10 above tiny Belgium – hardly known for its film industry
  • New fund for Creative Europe programme for 2021-2027 is €2.4 billion, an 80% increase on last seven years

Here are the main parts of the announcement from the EU Commission yesterday

“The ‘MEDIA’ strand of the EU programme Creative Europe, designed to support European film and audiovisual industries, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021. To mark this, the European Commission is launching a campaign to celebrate the 30 years of support, as well as the launch of the new ‘MEDIA programme of Creative Europe’, running from 2021 to 2027.

“Since 1991, Creative Europe MEDIA has invested over €2.6 billion in the film and audiovisual industries to support the development, promotion and distribution of European works within Europe and beyond.

“For 2021-2027, the planned budget for the whole Creative Europe programme will be €2.4 billion, an 80% increase compared to the previous period (2014-2020), of which €1.4 billion will be devoted to its MEDIA sub-programme. The latter will keep supporting media projects with a European and international dimension, as well as nurturing talent and promoting the use of new technologies.

“Throughout 2021, the Commission will run a communication campaign to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the MEDIA strand of Creative Europe….. primarily on social media, aiming to reach young people and industry professionals.”

Observations

We knew, when we saw the press release from the EU Commission yesterday, that if we investigated this EU fund, we would find that once again the UK had paid into a fund for years and yet received a pittance back.

Given that Facts4EU.Org is not a recipient of EU funding – nor is ever likely to be – we could only look at just part of the EU’s ‘Media’ programme with the limited time and resource we had available – that of the production of individual films. The EU’s ‘Creative Europe’ programme includes funds for other activities but we chose to investigate funding for films, as almost all readers watch these.

Remainers are welcome to spend days poring over the 250,000+ items of data in the spreadsheets we eventually found – be our guest. We had to choose so we picked movies. We doubt the numbers will be substantially different in other categories.

Brexit is not "done" and the challenges mount

Unfortunately some people now think Brexit is "done" and not surprisingly the whole Covid thing has hit the level of donations we receive, which were already less than we needed to survive. We are most grateful to readers who have donated in recent days, but we badly need more readers to do the same. 10 readers donating £500 per month, or 50 readers donating £100 per month, or 1000 readers donating £5 per month - on top of the one-off donations and monthly donations we currently receive, this would just about keep us going.

Sadly, the challenges of seeing Brexit through are not the only concerns we face. Freedom of expression and the basic princples of democratic accountability are under attack as we we have never seen before. We have far more to do in researching, publishing, campaigning and lobbying Parliament than we have in terms of the financial resources to fulfil these tasks. We rely 100% on public donations from readers like you. Unlike the Remain/Rejoin camp, we do not have foreign billionaires to subsidise our work.

If you believe in a fully-free, independent, and sovereign United Kingdom, please make a donation now. It’s quick, secure, and confidential, and you can use one of the links below or you can use our Donations page here. You will receive a personal, friendly ‘thank you’ from a member of our team within 24 hours. Thank you so much if you can help to keep us going in these critical months ahead.
