Having been the most overcrowded EU country, are the UK’s deaths surprising?

Are our overcrowded cities to blame for high Coronavirus death rates?

Last week the EU’s statistical agency (Eurostat) published its latest figures for population densities. In these days when talk of “social distancing” is all the rage, the results for the UK are very revealing indeed.

As usual these days, Eurostat removed the UK completely from its published figures when it published last week. Nevertheless, this report relates to 2018 when the United Kingdom was still a member of the European Union and in our view it should have been included. Brexit Facts4EU.Org therefore delved into the raw data and can present an accurate picture for readers which includes the United Kingdom.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

Most populated city regions across the EU, 2018

The EU divided itself up geographically, socially and economically using its system called the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics, known as NUTS. It has four levels, starting at 0 for country-level, drilling down to NUTS level 3 as its most detailed level.

In order to understand overcrowding at a practical and local level we have looked at NUTS Level 3, as did the EU’s own statistics agency.

  • Eight out of the top 10 most densely-populated regions are in the UK
  • All eight are in London
  • 66% of the top 50 are in the UK
  • Half (49%) of the EU's 100 most densely-populated regions have always been in the UK

Below we are showing a comparison between what the EU reported last week, and the reality.

IMPORTANT : Why is Paris shown as "Paris", when London is not shown as "London"?

The answer to this is two-fold. Paris is much, much smaller than London. The EU's designation for "Paris" is in fact central Paris. The EU has divided up areas broadly equally but in our view "Paris" should be called "Central Paris" to avoid confusion.

"Paris" does not include its suburbs. The reason you do not see these in our list below is that these are shown as separate areas by the EU, and none of them make the top 10 for population density when including the UK. In the EU's list (which doesn't include the UK despite being a report covering 2018 when the UK was still a full member) there are Parisian suburbs listed.

Why didn’t we use country-level figures?

We chose not to highlight country-level population densities as these are less useful. At country level, figures for crowded city areas are diluted by vast swathes of the country where few people live, such as many areas of Scotland.

That said, readers may wish to know the overview so here it is:-

Observations

Most of the mainstream media seem to have been obsessed for weeks with trying to catch out the Government on a variety of questions related to the Coronavirus. One of the latest narratives is that the UK is doing worse than other countries in dealing with this virus.

We really wish that these journalists would do some research and start to ask some different questions.

Our research above shows that almost half of the top 100 most populated areas in the EU and UK are in the UK. We tend to think that information like this might be relevant, if people want to make comparisons with our continental partners.

We should be asking very different questions

Overall, our questions to the Government would be very different. We would like to know why the Government has “death toll” press conferences every day, and yet seems unable to inform the public of the catastrophic impact the measures it has taken are having on our economy and on deaths from other causes.

These are two absolutely fundamental issues. Perhaps the Government is relying on the fact that the majority of the public seem to want the current drastic lockdown measures to continue indefinitely.

They can’t inoculate so they indoctrinate us instead

We may not be experts in epidemiology but we do know a thing or two about indoctrination, having studied the EU every single day for the last five years. We dislike intensely the way in which the Government has controlled messaging in such a way that the majority of the public seem to have no knowledge of the true impacts of a continued lockdown.

People have even bought into the idea that they should “protect the NHS”, when in fact it’s the NHS which should be protecting the people.

At the very least, people should be treated like adults and be given all the information, so they can make up their minds properly.
