Referendum result – 12% higher than average of all votes for governments since joining EU

Brexit Facts4EU.Org puts the Referendum result into context

One of the many ways in which Remain MPs try to belittle the decision of the British people to leave the EU is to talk of “a narrow margin” of victory. Below we show just how disingenuous this is.

We researched the percentage votes for every UK government since the UK joined the EEC (forerunner of the EU) on 01 January 1973.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

Since joining the EU 46 years ago, UK governments have been elected on an average of 40.1% of the vote
No-one ever went to the Supreme Court to declare the results invalid
No-one ever said a general election should be re-run
No-one prevented a government from governing for more than three years after an election

Yet 51.9% of the British people voted to leave the EU
and over three years later the decision has still not been implemented

The percentage of the vote to leave the EU was almost 12% higher
than the average vote for all governments since we joined in the first place.

This is democracy – sometimes you win, sometimes you lose

The Referendum result was a clear decision by the British people to leave the EU, despite the massed ranks of the Establishment all backing Remain, and despite horrific scare stories and forecasts of immediate consequences of a Leave vote, which have all proved to be wrong.

If governments can be elected on as little as 35% of the vote, and if these governments can govern immediately, then the Referendum result of 51.9% has legitimacy beyond any question and it should have been implemented long ago.

Observations

Sometimes it strikes us as bizarre that we have to explain what should be statements of the obvious to people who are simply sore losers.

It really doesn’t matter what absurd contortions of logic and language are used by Remain MPs, at some point they must simply accept that they lost. They don’t have to like it, but they really must move on.

We know that some readers have strong views on electoral reform, but this article is not about that. It's about the democratic legitimacy of the result of the EU Referendum. WOW!! What a splendid article which places our referendum into its proper context where this research cannot be challenged, not even by the most extremist of [LibDem] MPs. Indeed, these easy to read figures and simple explanation will give the political class a much needed 'boot up the backside' to get on with delivering Brexit.
A majority of MPs (and others) have thus far been set on frustrating Brexit by any underhanded means possible because we didn't give them the result THEY wanted, though I look forward to see how remain-voting extremist MPs will attempt to spin this detail.
I recognise there are remain-voting MPs whom do accept the referendum decision, whilst many of their colleagues do not.
MPs get upset as they realise it's a majority remain Parliament AGAINST a majority Leave electorate?
In my opinion, Parliament has become corrupted by their majority whom fail to accept losers consent.
MPs talk of parliamentary sovereignty and democracy. Lest they forget, it is the majority electorate trying to save UK democracy whilst a majority of MPs are keen to give it away to a foreign power (for which they have zero mandate) - which by the way we now know the EU sees as building an 'empire'. Who says so, Mr Verhofstadt does.
So we have a situation where elected MPs choose to ignore the largest mandate in British history - they do so at their peril.
It's also worth pointing out the obvious, that MPs where once ordinary people like the rest of us.
To those MPs fighting to uphold Brexit, I offer my thanks and support your efforts.

Comment 2, Well said Jon - " Who says so, Mr Verhofstadt does" - he at the Liberals side with the nasty "Bollocks to Brexit" T-Shirt, and all the talk of creating a utopian 'empire' in Europe no more silly nation states.

After decades of accepting that my democratic vote didn't get the result I wanted (that must make me one of the old and stupid ones) I never dreamt that the referendum would throw up such undemocratic defiance , particularly amongst the very people that need the system to work: MPs.
Well, the system is nearly in ruins , let's hope that he Supreme Court doesn't finish it off.
What this old and stupid person wants to ask the young and clever is this: Are you so certain of the EU that you not only condone what's happened over the last three years but rejoice in it, do you really know what these politicians have done to your future?

I actually do not think electoral reform is even necessary. What is needed in my view is the scrapping of the Fixed Term parliament.
It is clear that the 'bubble' is remain and the electorate simply say that we had a 'people's vote' in 2016 when the establishment said we are too confused to make a common sense judgement, over to you - the reult of your choice will be implemented. However then the vote was the opposite of what the remainer establishment and the EU, who they work with hand-in-hand wanted. Ever since that day, they have worked to create the crisis that the country is now in! It is they who have created the constitutional crisis.
The country now finds itself in a very bleak position, unless Boris has the guts to leave with no 'deal'.
We are leaving an undemocratic 'institution' that wants to become an empire we should have left 3 years ago.
The time for making 'deals' and the like is AFTER we have 100% left. It is as simple as that. That to my mind is what voting Leave meant. Leave won the vote, and for the first time in British history as far as I can remember the Government of the day has been ignoring the vote by kicking the proverbial can for 3.5 years.
Unbelievably sad for Great Britain's standing in the world. Our enemies see us as weaklings.
The only way to improve on this world vision is to leave without a deal.

Great article. I think it really highlights some important points.
The graph may be interpretted as a little misleading though. Comparing a binary referendum against a multi party general election gives a poor comparison.
I'd be really interested to see the brexit referendum compared to all the other referendums that have taken place in the UK.
That would show those pesky liberals how democratically wrong they are!
