The UK has the fewest MEPs per head of population, out of all EU countries

At 10pm this evening the results of the EU Parliamentary elections will start to be announced. Ahead of tonight’s results, readers might like to know some things about the EU Parliamentary elections.

The value of your vote

The UK has the fewest MEPs per head of population out of all EU28 countries. On average each British MEP represents 908,000 people, using the EU’s latest statistics.

By contrast, each of Malta’s six MEPs represent just 79,000 people. Each of Luxembourg’s six MEPs represent just 100,000 people.

Let’s take the home country of Jean-Claude Juncker

The unelected President of the EU Commission comes from the tiny EU country of Luxembourg. Brexit Facts4EU.Org looked at how well this country does when it comes to MEPs.

As you will see above, little Luxembourg has the second-highest number of MEPs per inhabitant. The EU Parliament analyses these things by inhabitants, but in order to present a balanced picture we also looked at the number of voters in Luxembourg and in the UK.

The picture is even more shocking

Brexit Facts4EU.org Summary

When we look at MEPs by voters, rather than by population, the picture gets even worse

UK MEPs have to represent nearly 14 times as many voters as MEPs from the EU Commission President’s country

This means that a British vote in the EU elections is worth 7% that of a Luxembourger’s vote

Every single one of the 73 British MEPs will each be representing an electorate which is
more than double that of the entire electorate of the country of Luxembourg.

A side note for Brexit

As a full member of the EU, Luxembourg can veto a Brexit deal in the EU Council. Yet its population is the size of the Bristol area of the UK.

MEP and MP comparison

As a comparison, we also looked at the number of UK voters (not inhabitants) per MP in the UK Parliament. On average each UK MP represents approximately 72,000 voters. On the same basis each UK MEP will be representing 641,000 voters - nine times as many as Westminster MPs.

The two jobs are entirely different of course, but perhaps this demonstrates how remote the EU Parliament’s MEPs are from ordinary people.

Observations

Brexit Facts4EU.Org has thrown a bright light on the realities of the EU for more than three years every day, using official statistics from the EU, as above.

It is perfectly obvious when listening to Remain MPs that very few have any idea what the EU is or does in reality. This article is another attempt to show the facts, which is what we believe the public want.

Wherever possible we use the EU’s own information. In this case the information above has been derived from numerous official EU sources from the EU Parliament and from the EU Commission. As the data comes from the EU itself, this makes it difficult for Remainers to counter it.
