How the EU is really just a handful of countries
An exclusive Brexit Facts4EU.Org Saturday insight into “the EU”
Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary
- Just 8 countries account for 70% of the total EU land mass
- Just 6 countries account for 70% of the total EU population
- Just 5 countries account for 70% of total EU GDP
The popular narrative amongst Remainers is that the UK is insignificant in the World. “We’re so much stronger in a union of 28 countries,” they say.
Here we present some basic facts, showing how the EU is really a much smaller club, with 20 or more countries added on for credibility.

France, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Poland, Italy and the United Kingdom make up 70.4% of the land mass of the EU.
By geographical area, the UK represents just 5.5% of the European Union. This is of course in dramatic contrast to its importance in other ways, as we show below.

In terms of population, 6 countries account for of the total EU population. These are Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Poland.
The UK has 12.9% of the total EU population. It has over two and a half times the population density of France, and 12 times that of Sweden.

When it comes to the economic output of the European Union, the figures get really interesting. Just 5 countries account for 70% of the output of the entire EU. That’s 5 countries out of 28, producing over two-thirds of its wealth.
Observations
Little Malta – whose anti-British Prime Minister Muscat is constantly welcomed to No.10 by Mrs May – produces just 0.07% of total EU GDP. Yes, that’s less than one-tenth of one percent.
And yet the little Maltese Prime Minister whom Theresa May entertained once again in Downing Street on Monday has an equal vote to that of the United Kingdom in all motions in the EU Council requiring unanimity.
Let’s get a sense of proportion
What kind of world do we live in where someone representing a population the size of Kirklees in West Yorkshire - and with an economy that wouldn’t even register if it were to leave the EU – can command the attention of the Prime Minister of the 5th-largest economy in the World?
How can the UK be beholden in any way to such a tiny country? How is it possible that we have a Prime Minister so weak and ignorant that she can’t stand tall and proud against the institutional tyranny of the EU?
The majority of the British public voted to leave the EU. In this they were far smarter than the apology for politicians we now seem to have in Parliament… and even more disastrously in No.10.
