Comparing this June’s results to June last year, industrial production in the Eurozone fell by 2.6%. Germany was the worst performer, seeing a fall of 6.2%. Ireland fell by 3.9%, whilst the UK saw a relatively modest fall of 1.2%.

Germany’s GDP goes “Negativ”

Adding to Germany’s woes, the German federal statistics agency, Destatis, announced yesterday that Germany’s GDP fell in the second quarter of this year. As Germany is the economic powerhouse of the EU, this is not a welcome sign in Brussels, particularly as Germany now faces the prospect of a further fall in exports to the UK after Brexit.

Ireland needs to worry about Brexit too

With the Dublin government seemingly immune to concerns about its stance over Brexit and its relationship with its largest trading partner (the UK), the fall of 3.9% compared to June last year is worrying. Even more worryingly, its industrial output fell by 8.8% compared to the previous month.

As a comparison, the UK’s production fell by just 0.1% compared to May.

Monthly comparison by main industrial grouping

In the euro area in June 2019, compared with May 2019, production of capital goods fell by 4.0%, non-durable consumer goods by 2.8%, durable consumer goods by 1.2%, intermediate goods by 0.8% and energy by 0.2%.

In the EU28, production of capital goods fell by 3.5%, non-durable consumer goods by 2.2%, durable consumer goods by 1.4%, intermediate goods by 0.9% and energy by 0.4%.

Annual comparison by main industrial grouping

In the euro area in June 2019, compared with June 2018, production of capital goods fell by 4.4%, intermediate goods by 2.6%, durable consumer goods by 1.0% and energy by 0.1%, while production of non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.1%.

In the EU28, production of capital goods fell by 3.7%, intermediate goods by 2.0% and durable consumer goods by 0.5%, while production of non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.2% and energy by 0.6%.

Observations

Brexit is fundamentally about sovereignty and democracy, not economic statistics.

The reason we bring readers economic information like that above is not because we enjoy analysing such things. We do it because organs like the BBC are fond of reporting prominently on anything remotely negative about the UK, but seldom report on anything negative about the EU – particularly when such news paints the UK in a more positive light.

The economic picture overall in the world is not rosy. Certainly the latest figures from the EU reinforce concerns generally.

In our view this highlights the prospects of a fully independent and sovereign United Kingdom outside the economic shackles of Brussels regulations and tariffs. Post-Brexit, the UK will be free to adapt and thrive, using every conceivable competitive advantage.

If the UK Government had signed the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration, the UK’s fate would have been tied to the EU, with no possibility of responding to the global economic circumstances.

Roll on 31 October, “come what may, do or die”.

It's mid-August and many people are on holiday. Meanwhile we are working on a major initiative to push back against undemocratic MPs in Parliament, together with other Brexit organisations.
