A rare glimpse behind the Brexit Facts4EU curtains

What does it take to do what we do - and to impact public opinion?

And if what we do matters, how can we ensure the organisation will be here tomorrow?

What you are about to read is a Facts4EU rarity. No charts. No facts and figures diligently researched and checked from official sources. No comments on it from famous figures.

Why have we done this? Because we have to. And maybe, because this article is such a rarity you will be interested in reading what follows.

A glimpse behind the scenes… And what makes us different

When researching and writing each new daily report, we often need to link back to a previous report we have published on a related topic, to give readers the opportunity to read more if they wish. When looking for these we are sometimes mildly surprised how many detailed reports we produce each week on a wide variety of subjects. We always find a fairly recent report we have produced on an aspect of the subject matter in question.

The full process involves far more than that, of course. For just some of what we do, here’s a peak behind the curtains…

  • Morning meeting – topics, evolving storylines, progress of reports in train, actions, likely publication dates

THEN:

  • In-depth research – official sources, other (countering) sources, government and political comments
  • Building spreadsheets, data summarising, cross-referencing, rough charts
  • Raw text, structuring, refining, first checking process
  • Full text, headlines, final charts/tables, photo sourcing (royalty-free, see below), title image (‘tile’), checking
  • First coding run, team review, approaches to politicians for comment, or to bodies referenced
  • Final edit, review, any comment included, final check, go live
  • Creation of social media posts, launching
  • Promotion to other groups and media
  • Constant review of comments on reports

The above is only a selection of some of the tasks involved in publishing a simple report. This does not include all the liaison with many different parties very week, production of videos when appropriate, and many other weekly activities.

The facts give credibility - and credible information influences the public

Any independence organisation can - and does - write wordy articles (like this one!) making assertions about this or that, e.g. “The US is the UK’s biggest trading partner by far”, but it takes more diligent and time-consuming work to back such statements with facts researched from the official sources. And then to produce our famous ‘at-a-glance’ charts which tell the story for voters in a picture.

COMING UP... A truly epic story of the seas
"The EU’s boats are stealing our fish in massive quantities, ignoring quotas, falsifying documents, polluting our seas, and killing our wildlife - and the UK authorities are turning a blind eye.’

An almost unbelievable series of reports, backed by eyewitness testimony from British fishermen, photos and videos taken clandestinely, and painstaking research of fish landings documents. Investigative journalism at its finest - and as it used to be - involving weeks of work.

It is the facts – researched from official sources - which give articles and claims credibility. Without them we would be just another commentator. Without them we would not ‘shift the dial’ and inform and enlighten the public. Without them the public perception would continue to be subject to mis- and dis-information.

Let’s face it, the bulk of the messaging the public receive is sympathetic to - or actively in favour of – negative Brexit claims, woke nonsense, globalism, open borders, gender absurdities, Net Zero extremism, authoritarian lockdowns, etc. This ideological warfare is fuelled by vast sums from foreign billionaires and promoted by media organisations such as the BBC, Sky News, FT, Guardian, etc. All we can say is “thank heavens for GB News,” who cover our work on a regular basis.

Facts4EU.Org and other independence organisations

Faced with the almost daily onslaught from those promoting the viewpoints outlined above, who is taking this on? There are many pro-independence organisations, and some of these soak up all the significant donations by individuals of significant means. Often this is due to a reputation built many years ago and certainly no longer earned.

Without the Facts4EU think-tank there would be no organisation in the country with an arsenal of over 2,500 reports produced over the last 10 years. None of these other groups could refer back to detailed reports on so many topics in order to debunk wild statements from the Rejoin, woke, Net Zero, open borders, gender-bending, free speech-banning community, using concrete evidence. None of them publishes Monday to Friday, as Facts4EU does.

So why are you telling us this, Facts4EU?

Despite our daily reports now appearing regularly on national television, we continue to rely on a relatively small number of donations from members of the public which are typically in the order of £5. We are enormously grateful to these donors, as every £5 adds up. Unfortunately there simply aren’t enough of these and we lose money every month. In practice this means that team members find themselves working for nothing, or for an amount far below the minimum wage. Inevitably many team members have been forced to go off and take paid work instead, which means they can then only help on a very part-time basis.

One of the major reasons we don’t receive more funding is because of the plethora of pro-independence organisations operating in the same territory. As we pointed out above, some have been going for years and their heyday is long past – but this doesn’t stop them getting their regular, large donations. Others have set up more recently and typically are run by those who ‘don’t mind the limelight’. No-one on the Facts4EU team has ever been interested in the limelight.

COMING UP...
‘The last time German elections were rigged like this, it didn’t end well…’

A report on how elected MPs, mostly from the Right, have been denied their seats in the German parliament by a recent law passed by the previous socialist government, and how German citizens abroad were denied the chance to vote.

Unfortunately the situation is not improving. One new pro-independence post-Brexit group has just launched and we know of another on the way. All this does is fragment and dilute the effort and the effectiveness of teams which should be combining. In financial terms, the available money from donors is being diluted and spread over far too many organisations, many of which can show little actual output for this money.

“Why don’t you have a paywall?”

A large number of media outlets now have paywalls. Facts4EU has consistently refused to force readers to pay, in order to ensure that our important factual work reaches as many people as possible and especially young people, often with limited funds. We see the whole point of what we do each day - starting in the case of one team member at 2am - to be to get our information out to the maximum number of people.

So no, we will not install a paywall. All readers can read the report of the day free of charge, as well as the 29 most recent reports before this, by clicking on ‘news’ in the main menu.

“Why don’t you put advertising on the site?”

Yes, nice idea. Provided this isn’t too intrusive, we would be all in favour. We read many media sites – household names – where the advertising almost eclipses the content. Provided we can allow advertising in a limited, reasonable way, we’re sure readers wouldn’t mind.

The problem is time. It would take a bit of work to find out about the various digital advertising agencies and which are the best and easiest to deal with. Assuming we found a few good possibilities, they would no doubt ask us to produce all manner of data about our reader numbers, social media reach, etc.

Then there’s the technical side. We would presumably have to do some considerable coding to enable any advertising feed to appear where the advertisers wanted. Sadly, we lost our web developer a long time ago, as we couldn’t afford to pay him, so this would take some time to implement. And time is always our enemy.

Finally, after all that it might turn out that we would be boycotted by corporate advertisers and advertising agencies on political grounds, as GB News has been.

COMING UP...
Immigration from the EU – The hidden story of just how many millions of migrants were approved by the UK Home Office under the ‘EU Settlement Scheme’

Not only EU citizens but also huge numbers of ‘relatives’ from all over the world. And they are STILL being approved, over three years after the deadline passed. A real shocker.

Where does this leave us?

Given all the above, we want to advise readers that next week we will be taking a couple of days out, to do nothing other than attempt to raise funds. This means there will be at least a couple of days with no reports. We just hope we don’t lose too many readers in the process. And we hope you’ll stick with us!

If we don’t do this, we risk our survival. Thousands read our site every day. Thousands more watch our videos, and even more see us on TV. If more readers and viewers could just make that effort and donate to us here, preferably with a monthly amount, we would not have to do this and we could focus on our important work informing the public and politicians about the true facts on so many issues, which is what matters.

Thank you for reading this and thank you for your understanding

If you have never before donated, it really is quick and easy. We are grateful for the smallest amount, you will receive a thank you email, and your name will remain confidential unless you tell us otherwise.

Please do what you can now. Thank you.

P.S. At any moment in time, we typically have 4-5 major reports in various stages of preparation. Sadly, some of these never see the light of day, as the news agenda overtakes us and our limited resources have to adjust. A great shame, because it could all be so different…
