A lookback to Starmer's first 90 days and a fightback to change the next 90

This is personal and constitutional at the same time

Yesterday we published an appeal to help fund a legal case against Sir Keir Starmer’s government. Given his actions following the EU Referendum in using every technique possible to overturn the largest democratic vote in British history – including using his friends at the top of the legal profession – some will feel there is poetic justice in his own tactics being used against him.

In today’s piece we will personalise the Chagos story but before this we would like to draw readers’ attention to an example of the way in which Facts4EU has consistently been ‘ahead of the curve’ on some of the biggest stories of our time – one of which is this shameless action based on extreme political ideology. We hope readers will forgive us, but if we don’t do this, who will?

We have two good reasons for a quick stroll down Memory Lane

The first reason for reminding regular readers of something we published eight months ago tomorrow, (04 Oct 2024), is to suggest that we have consistently brought important matters to the public’s attention well before ‘the pack’. We refer to “the public’s attention”, but of course this includes MPs, commentators, other independence organisations, and the mainstream media.

In this case from October last year, it was the occasion of Sir Keir’s first 90 days in power. We highlighted six major issues and here they are in a much-shortened version, quoted from verbatim:-

What follows was written and published on 04 October 2024

Opinion on the decisions of Sir Keir Starmer in his first 90 days in power

What follows concerns six decisions taken by Sir Keir Starmer in his period in office to date. In their own way, each decision is deeply troubling

1. Giving - a massive sales aid to people smugglers

The first major decision from the UK’s new Prime Minister occurred on Day One of his premiership, when he announced the cancelling of the Rwanda Plan for the deportation of illegal migrants. In an instant, the only major deterrent factor for illegal migrants entering the UK was swept away – that of the possibility of being removed from the country in short order.

2. Giving in – to its union paymasters

At the end of this month the new government of Sir Keir Starmer will present its first budget. In no small part the tax and spend measures adopted will be determined by the billions in costs arising from the PM’s complete surrender to some of the country’s largest unions and their enormous pay claims.

The budget will also pay abject homage to the forecasts of the ‘Office for Budget Responsibility’ (OBR). The Facts4EU.Org team has shown repeatedly how their forecasts have always been dire and unfit for purpose.

3. Giving up – on any pretence of respecting Brexit and delivering its benefits in full

On Wednesday (02 Oct 2024) Mr Starmer was in Brussels….. In the ensuing press conference Sir Keir was at pains to stress his meeting with EU Commission President was about high level mood-setting. The outcome was him leaving Brussels having given his acquiescence to the unacceptable existing arrangements.

“.... They reaffirmed their mutual commitment to uphold international law and to the European Convention on Human Rights.”

- Joint EU-UK Statement, Wed 02 Oct 2024

Readers should note the reference to “the full and faithful implementation of those agreements”. In short, the shameful elements of the UK’s various deals with the EU will remain. The EU only wishes to discuss and negotiate new deals on the UK surrendering yet more of its fishing rights in its own waters, a ‘youth mobility scheme’ once again allowing EU nationals free movement into the UK, and a defence pact which will limit the UK’s freedom to act independently in its own interests and which will undermine NATO.

4. Giving away – sovereignty over a key overseas territory and strategic military asset

….. this is a catastrophic blunder.... As with Sir Keir’s apparent naivete in negotiating with the EU, so it seems he is equally naïve about the threat from dictatorial Chinese Communist Party ruled by Xi-Jinping….. But be in no doubt: affect us this will.

Next we move from giving to taking

5. Taking from pensioners

At a time of continued increases in household energy bills, Sir Keir decided to penalise over nine million pensioners by taking away their Winter Fuel Allowance.... Not one word of this policy was included in the Labour Manifesto, on which he was elected only weeks earlier.

6. Taking from rich donors

At the same time as the Winter Fuel Allowance debacle, another crisis was developing, as Facts4EU reported at the time :

As Labour’s spin doctors from the Tony Blair era might say: “The optics on this aren’t good.” The story continues to rumble on... Sir Keir feeling obliged to repay the £6,000 cost of his VIP Taylor Swift tickets....

Conclusion

Above are the six most newsworthy decisions by the Prime Minister in his first 90 days in office and some disturbing trends are starting to emerge.

None of the items listed have had any approval from the British people; not in Labour’s election manifesto nor in what the electorate might have expected in general terms. Some are simply PR disasters but others will impact the country for years to come – particularly the decision to give up UK territory in the Indian Ocean. It can only be hoped that Sir Keir will learn from his mistakes but currently the signs are deeply worrying.

All the above was written and published on 04 October 2024

So what has happened on our six points above?

  1. Nigh-on 1,200 illegal migrants crossed in one day, on Saturday, and all records are being broken since this problem started in 2018.
  2. All of this has come true.
  3. The ‘Surrender Summit’ two weeks ago proves how right we were: fishing, youth mobility, we will be writing more on these.
  4. Giving away sovereignty – The subject of our article yesterday and today. Simply appalling.
  5. One success – Starmer has been forced to reverse his policy on the Winter Fuel Allowance.
  6. Taking from donors – He was forced to return some of the ‘hospitality’ he received, so we count this as a partial success.

Calling all you multi-millionaires who haven’t yet left the country

We need around £300,000 to put Facts4EU on a sound financial footing. The above is just one example of why we are the ones most likely to effect the changes you would like to see. If we can do what we’ve done for the last nine years on a shoestring, imagine what we could do if properly funded?

Now back to Chagos

We thought readers may like to see how Chagos is about real people, as well as some very profound and serious issues relating to sovereignty. We are grateful to the brave Chagossian, Misley Mandarin, for allowing us to use his photos and for his comments.

Message from Misley Mandarin:

"We are grateful to Facts4EU and CIBUK for helping to promote our cause and for helping to raise the extra money we need to fight this case. I would like to thank all readers who have donated so far and hope more of you will do so.

“We were evicted from our homeland by a past Labour government, and now the current Labour government is doing something even worse — stripping us of our right to self-determination.

“We are standing up for our basic human rights. We will not let Keir Starmer and his government get away with this betrayal. We deserve justice, and we will not be silenced.”

Message from Ben Habib, former MEP, Chairman of the Great British PAC, and funder of much of this fight:

"“When a government habitually throws the country and its interests under a bus, the people must take action.

There is no need or legitimacy to the surrender of Chagos.

So I am helping fund the legal action to stop this illegal act.

It is an uphill struggle. Our courts are politicised. But we must try.

I’d like to thank Claire Bullivant for all she’s done to get this moving and Misley Mandarin for standing up to be counted.

The country owes a debt of gratitude to them and the hundreds of others who are fighting for Chagos and the Chagossians."

- Ben Habib, commenting to Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org, 03 June 2025

Observations

Many journalists can often feel uncomfortable, reading back over what they wrote in the previous year. Events seldom pan out the way people expect. Generally speaking, the Facts4EU team are reasonably comfortable - and with one aspect of our work in particular. We have a good track record of identifying the key issues a long way in advance, including the Chagos Islands.

Fishing is now in the news a great deal. It wasn’t when we started writing about it again in 2018 and after, and then again to a considerable degree since March of this year. We were the ones who started this. The Chagos Islands are now big news. The same is true of ‘youth mobility’ and defence. And no-one needs telling that the small boats crisis is now at epic proportions.

If you want to do something for your country, we respectfully suggest that any money you give to Facts44EU will be the best investment in the country’s future your money can buy.

Please, please help us to carry on our vital work in defence of independence, sovereignty, democracy and freedom by donating today. Thank you.
