And now, a fun game for all the family!
To stave off any feelings of isolation and depression at having to work through the holidays (including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day), a member of the Facts4EU.Org think-tank team came up with a bright idea in our regular (virtual) office morning meeting yesterday, New Year’s Eve.
The Office's New Year's Eve Meeting
“Why not take a 10-minute break and play a political parlour game?” he asked. As other team members started wondering how on earth something like Charades would work in an Internet Zoom Workplace environment, he quickly provided a suggestion.
“For example, if the leaders were each a percussion instrument, which one would they be?” he continued.
There was general approval for the idea but as the meeting was about to pause for ideas to be scribbled down, a young female member of the team piped up with “But I only know the name ‘drum’, I don’t what the types are called.”
“Then use Wikipedia,” our Chairman said. Immediately there were horrified gasps around the virtual room. “On this one occasion only, I’ll give special dispensation, ” he added. “After all, you’re hardly likely to garner much enlightenment from our usual research sources like the ONS, Bank of England, the IMF, the OECD, the EU Commission, etc.” And at this point team members dispersed to work on this most unusual problem.
The results of this crucial vote
Reconvening five minutes later, the entries were tallied for each candidate and the Teller (a.k.a. our Admin Manager) announced the results. Below, for what it’s worth, is what the combined intellects of the best research minds in the political business came up with in their five-minute break.
- Keir : Bass drum
- Kemi : Suspended cymbal
- Nigel : Snare drum & Hi-hat
- Ed Davey : Triangle
The top reasons given were as follows :-
- Bass drum - Monotonous and unchanging
- Suspended cymbal - Important but doesn’t add a great deal
- Snare drum & Hi-hat – Disrupts, dominates and invigorates
- Triangle – The perennial primary school favourite
At this point our Chairman suddenly announced: “Thank you. The Ayes have it. The Ayes have it. Unlock!”
The other team members exchanged worried glances. The Chairman had certainly been overdoing it recently, the looks seemed to say, and he had definitely been watching too many parliamentary debates. One of them would have to find a way of disabling the Chairman’s online feed to Parliament TV….
And finally
For readers who might like to try this at home, you could of course vary the question. (Our Chairman admits to being “vaguely musical, I suppose”, which is no doubt why the originator of the game chose a musical instrument on which to test out the idea.)
For example: “If the leaders were each a music group or solo artist, which one would they be and why?” Or you could deviate from the musical genre and apply this to almost any aspect of life : food dish, drink, animal, film star, etc, etc.
Have fun, and Happy New Year to you all !
