Online, 11am today, Sir John talks growth, living standards, Trump, taxes, and regulation

In the glorious surroundings of an Oxford College today, Friday, 24 January 2025, Sir John Redwood will give a lecture on economic growth – the top policy priority of Rachel Reeves, Sir Keir Starmer, and the Labour government. Facts4EU.Org is pleased to provide live online access to this event to Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org readers and viewers.

As the UK economy begins to stutter badly under the impacts of Ms Reeves’ increased taxation, higher wage bills, punitive and rising Net Zero energy costs, and new employment legislation to be imposed on employers, Sir John will deliver his thoughts on what should be done to reverse the downward trend.

The current malaise started with the new government talking down the economy immediately after being elected. It was followed by a ‘depression budget’ and is now being made worse by rising government spending, poor productivity, and higher interest rates on government debt.

"Things can only get better..."

In the quintessentially British - and exquisitely beautiful - surroundings of The Old Library of All Souls College, Oxford, Sir John gives his thoughts on the way to a brighter future for us all.

NOTE: Only available live due to College restrictions, so we also present Kemi Badenoch's 'mea culpa' video released on YouTube yesterday, which may be watched at any time. (Scroll down below Sir John's lecture.)

Regrettably the College denied us permission to record Sir John's lecture which would have meant readers could watch it at a more convenient time, and so if you are unable to watch at 11am today, we present Kemi Badenoch in consolation. As this second video was recorded, it may be watched at any time. This is available below Sir John's lecture.

Growth in the economy and economic prosperity for all is naturally the aim of every government. This lecture revolves around the best ways to achieve this.

“The lecture will welcome the government policy aim for the UK to be the fastest growing economy of the G7 and work from the target to grow living standards. It will look at the current mixture of business taxes, subsidies and proposed public capital investment and suggest changes.

“It will examine a number of sectors to show how changes to regulation, licences, specific charges and taxes and to government procurement could make a difference. It will consider why the USA has had faster growth than the EU this century so far, and will compare President Trump's proposals with EU and UK approaches to growth.”

- The Rt Hon Sir John Redwood, 21 Jan 2025

Kemi Badenoch : "You were right to kick us out"

On Wednesday (22 Jan 2025), the Leader of the Conservative Party, the Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP, released a video which was published on YouTube yesterday. Given that we were denied permission by All Souls College Oxford to record Sir John's lecture and make it accessible to all at any time, we are presenting the video of Kemi Badenoch in its place.

Here is what Mrs Badenoch and the Conservative Party says

"In 2024, the British public kicked the Conservatives out of office. They were right to do so. Now, we need to tell the truth. We need to regain your trust.

"How will we do that? The Leader of the Conservative Party Kemi Badenoch spells is [sic] out in this never before seen video."

About All Souls and its Fellows

© All Souls College, Oxford, 2025

All Souls College was planned, built, and endowed in the 1430s by Henry Chichele, long-serving Archbishop of Canterbury. It received its foundation charter in 1438 from King Henry VI, co-opted by the Archbishop as the College's co-founder.

Today the College is primarily an academic research institution with particular strengths in the humanities and social and theoretical sciences and it contains an outstanding library. It also has strong ties to public life. Although its Fellows are involved in teaching and supervision of research, there are no undergraduate members.

There are several categories of Fellowship. Sir John Redwood has the rare distinction of being a Distinguished Fellow. A very small number of Distinguished Fellowships are awarded to Fellows who have attained distinction in the service of the Crown, law, literature, science, art, education, or public affairs.

Observations

With the new Government's No.1 policy priority being economic growth, Sir John could not have chosen a better topic for his lecture at All Souls.

We hope readers will find this interesting. We are certain we will.
