Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary
Excerpts from this Global Discussion Forum
1. Charles-Henri Gallois, Leader, “Reprenons le Controle” party
On Brexit and the changing attitudes to the EU in France
“2016 – an amazing year”
Contrary to received opinion, Charles-Henri said many in France took inspiration from the Brexit Referendum victory in the UK and Donald Trump’s election as US President.
“It is possible to win against the mainstream media”
Mainstream opinion within the French establishment did its best to demonise Brexit, he said, but the economic disaster which they predicted has not taken place in Britain. Instead, he said, the “apocalypse is in the eurozone.”
“70% of the French people want to take back control”
Just as in the UK, disenchantment with the EU has grown and grown in France with a clear majority wanting to take back control. A recent poll indicated that 62% of those asked wanted a referendum on membership of the EU.
“State of fright”
The tactics used by the establishment on both sides of the Channel to frighten people into voting their way are striking. For “Project Fear” read “State of fright” in France. He said the policy was designed to protect the immigrant community against the indigenous population.
On mass immigration
“You cannot be sovereign if you don’t control your borders”
Mass and uncontrolled immigration are not unique to Britain. There is widespread concern at the numbers coming across the French border. 500,000 are coming in every year according to Charles-Henri – the same size as the population of Toulouse.
On the Lisbon Treaty
“We won in 2005 by 55%. What is worrying is it made no difference”
Charles-Henri said the EU Constitution Treaty of 2005 ran roughshod over the will of the French people, in spite of 55% voting against. The terms of the Treaty were tweaked and the people’s decision was effectively overridden by the French Parliament.
On French Farming
“If you cannot feed your own population, you are in trouble. We should be self-sufficient. Then export what’s on top.”
On the recent French parliamentary elections
“It has been stolen from the people to keep the National Rally away”
Charles-Henri said there is no legitimacy following the general election earlier this summer. You now have an unstable coalition from far left to centre right which has no popular support behind it. It would be the equivalent of all the British parties coalescing in order to keep out Reform UK.
On nuclear power
This is one area where France excels in comparison with Britain. Charles-Henri would like to continue to expand nuclear energy as the basis of France’s energy mix. It is clean and cheap.
On the ECHR
“We should leave”
On the Brexit Referendum Result
“The best political moment of my lifetime!”
2. Laurent Henninger, Co-Leader, Le Mouvement Politique Citoyen party
On the reasons for setting up the 'Mouvement Politique Citoyen'
“We were not satisfied with the status quo. [The other parties] are too ideological and dangerous.”
“We try to be neither left nor right, we are open to everybody on either side… We think that it would be a shame to stay frozen on 20th century ideologies.”
On the war in Ukraine
“I am on the side of Russia. It was provoked by Washington and London. They want to destroy Russia as they did to Yugoslavia in the 1990’s.”
On the proposal of an EU army within NATO
“The nation state is our founding principle”
Laurent expressed his strong opposition to an EU foreign policy and an EU army. He is in favour of an independent France, its own armed forces with a nuclear deterrent under sole authority of the French government.
On the MPC”s attitude towards immigration
“It is not possible to integrate millions of people.”
He contrasted the United States as a nation of juxtaposed communities with all their differences with France where everyone is French.
On the Macron government
“The worst government this country has ever had… The Macron government is a catastrophe made up of foreign agents.”
On Economic Policy
“We are in favour of capitalism but not hyper-capitalism.”
On France’s potential
“We are a bridge between northern and southern European cultures. We have armed forces that are the best in Europe [and a] talent to integrate foreigners when they came in limited numbers.”
“We don’t want to be a hyper-power dominating the world, but we have assets to be a great country again.”
On comparisons with the National Rally (Marine Le Pen)
“We want to be bigger than the National Rally. The National Rally has completely capitulated on the national issues on Frexit, on the euro, on NATO. They are now a very mainstream party. They say they are against mass immigration but if they stay within the EU, how will they implement a policy to control it?”
About our keynote speakers
First keynote speaker : Charles-Henri Gallois
Charles-Henri is a graduate of the EM Lyon Business School in finance. He is currently a financial director in a large company and has worked internationally in Spain and Switzerland.
He has been politically committed to Frexit for more than 12 years and is the author of the books 'The Economic Illusions of the European Union' and 'Our Great Challenges of the 21st Century: Energy and Immigration'. He is the Chairman of Reprenons le Controle, ('Let's Take Back Control'), a party whose aim is to secure a referendum on France’s membership of the EU.
A whistleblower, he denounced the scandal of French state-indexed borrowings and that of the colossal mismanagement of the financing of the EU’s 'recovery plan.'
Second keynote speaker : Laurent Henninger
Laurent Henninger is a historian specialising in military matters. He is co-founder and Secretary-General of the 'Mouvement Politque Citoyen'.
Mr Henninger worked at a senior level for the French MoD. He is now retired, lives in Paris, and his time is devoted to research in military history and theory.
He came into the « souverainiste » (sovereignty) movement when he understood that nation states are the optimal form of state, rather than empires. In addition to being the co-founder of the Mouvement Politique Citoyen he is also a main partner of the Cercle Aristote, devoted to the consideration and the spreading of souverainiste ideas for more than 10 years.
Observations
Merci beaucoup!
Our sincere thanks to both Charles-Henri and to Laurent for providing us with a fascinating glimpse of the political climate in France. Reflecting on their observations, one is struck by the similarity of events taking place on both sides of the Channel. Truly Britain is not alone.
Perhaps the beginning of a new Entente Cordiale?
