Want to rejoin the EU? Take a look at the soaring costs

Part One – The rocketing EU expenditure from 2000-2021

Facts4EU analyses and summarises just how expensive this monolithic structure now is

As the unelected EU Commission has spread its tentacles into more and more aspects of the EU’s citizens’ lives, so have the costs increased. The budget for the current period is a massive €1.2 trillion (over £1 trillion GBP) – and this does not include all the new borrowing.

Below Facts4EU presents a simple ‘at-a-glance’ chart, revealing the EU Commission’s annual spending this century, using the Commission’s own figures. The data runs from 2000-2021.

It should be pointed out that the UK is still paying for part of this, thanks to the ‘Divorce Bill’ which was erroneously agreed to by Theresa May, with no basis in law.

And that’s not all…

Important caveat : As we have pointed out many times before, the EU has an official budget and then it has significant items which are “off-the-books” and which do not appear in the official budget expenditure.

In short, the above chart gives an indication of the rise in EU spending, but it does not tell the whole story. Even without all these “extras” it can be seen just how much the EU Commission has managed to increase its nominal budget this century.

The British people paid for over one-eighth of the EU27’s budget.

The EU’s most recent budget has exploded

In 2020 the EU Commission developed what it refers to as a “stimulus package” worth a staggering €2.02 trillion in today’s prices. It consists of the EU’s long-term budget for 2021-2027 of €1.21 trillion, topped up by €806.9 billion through something they call ‘NextGenerationEU’.

This is a means of increasing the Commission’s overall budget, and is alleged to be a temporary instrument to power the recovery from Covid-19 lockdowns. It is all funded by borrowing on the world’s money markets, racking up debts for every EU country. Previously the Commission had not been allowed to borrow.

The EU sets the limits of its spending in the multiannual financial framework (MFF) : the EU’s long-term budget for the next 7 years. The 2021–2027 long-term budget or MFF of €1.21 trillion plus the borrowing of €806.9 billion is spent by the unelected EU Commission.

They have the power to withhold payments from this budget to the elected governments of member countries which they deem to be misbehaving.

Observations

Any analysis of EU funding is fraught with complications, as we have found out over many years. The Commission does not make it easy to produce a simple set of figures with which to tell a story to the ordinary voter.

It must not be forgotten that the UK is continuing to pay into the EU budget, and will continue doing so until 2064. This is thanks to the appalling behaviour of Theresa May and her Remainer Civil Servants who agreed to this.

In future reports we will show how the EU Commission is spending these vast amounts of money. We will also look at the breathtaking cost if the United Kingdom were to rejoin the European Union.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily. However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.
