If you want bad news, we’re afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere

Yesterday the Office for National Statistics released its latest report on a variety of everyday metrics, from fuel prices to job vacancies. And the picture is a lot rosier than readers may think.

With the daily diet of negative news in the media, it is easy to be despondent. In this report we summarise some interesting results published by the Government’s statistics agency yesterday, which might lift spirits this weekend.

Some interesting stats comparing latest figures with one year ago

Gas price : 87% below the weekly peak level seen in late August 2022
Fuel price : 64% below the July 2022 peak
Bank card payments up by 3% on the year
Retail footfall up by 6%
Average number of UK daily flights up by 5%

The trends are positive

All the metrics we looked at are positive, week-on-week, and almost all show improvements on one year ago.

Clearly we are all suffering continued high inflation (thanks to the Bank of England) but it takes time for the effect of price movements to be reflected in what we all actually pay for goods and services. The markets will adjust, if left to their own devices and without government interference.

As we reported last month, Germany is now in recession and the UK has outgrown it since the EU Referendum, in real terms. The UK's economy has continued to grow, albeit slowly. These are simple, official facts and should be more widely known.

Observations

As any newspaper editor will tell you: “Bad news sells.” We find the same thing. For example our reports last week on the troubles in the Eurozone were hugely popular.

Nevertheless we feel compelled to bring readers positive news to counter the relentless negativism perpetrated by some of the pro-EU and anti-Brexit elements of the mainstream media. If the Government would just get its finger out and force the anti-Brexit Civil Service to do its job, perhaps we might see some further Brexit benefits.

We do hope readers approve of reports such as this.

Trade for Australian beef following Johnson agreeing to a poor trade deal for UK.
Interest rates
UK borrowing costs
Brexit regret.

Good to see fuel prices coming down, this will take time to feed through the economy but should help going forward.

Latest YouGov poll shows people thinking Brexit was the right choice at its lowest level of 31%.
Those thinking it has been “more of a failure is up at 62%.
Those thinking it has been “more of a success” is now only 9%.

Apparently a survey in 2019 found that 16% believe the moon landings were staged.

The other thing that is up that I didn’t mention is the nationalist votes in Northern Ireland.

I voted 'leave' and would do so again tomorrow. The simple explanation for more people thinking Brexit was 'wrong' and "more of a failure" is the abject failure of the Gov. to enact a real Brexit and take advantage of our return to sovereignty.

The only thing leave voters regret is how badly the gov and civil service have performed on Brexit.
Most polls are worthless, especially ones with outcomes of fake moon landings.

Its now desperately needed to see price drops in home energy and petrol/diesel.
We also need to see some normality return to food and goods prices in the shops.
It now looks like retailers are just profiteering under the cloak of "its not us"
Will we ever see sensible prices again.

3 OA, 4AGB. Have a look at the vote leave web site, it is quite incredible to read the over optimistic positive view given of what Brexit would mean, it’s no wonder people voted for it. You can’t blame the civil service for the mess, Brexit as proposed was never deliverable. Some of the things coming out about the way the Australian trade deal was negotiated by Johnson may be flourished by the media but if that is how it played out our civil servants didn’t stand a chance.

Food pricing won’t fall significantly, when border checks for imports from the EU come in later this year this will only add costs for imports which will feed through to prices.

All of these items are linked together. UK Inflation is a problem but it is now being driven domestically. There are more than a million job vacancies in the UK which employers are struggling to fill. This is driving salaries upwards which is fuelling inflation. It is a problem for the Bank of England but it is manageable. If we contrast this with the Eurozone many countries have high levels of unemployment and very high levels of youth unemployment. This is keeping salaries low.

Presently half of our beef is imported from Europe. If Australia can provide beef at a lower cost this is a good thing. It may upset a few UK farmers but that's life in a competitive world.

These polls are being financed by organisation which are pursuing their own interests. It is well know that polls can be manipulated by the question asked and the choice of answers available. They know it will be picked up by the anti Brexit media channels. They are nothing like an informed vote where all items are debated in detail and the full facts are presented.

UK inflation comparable to the EU, and has been marginally lower
(Food inflation particularly)

Australia dropped ALL of it's tariffs except 2 products. UK made cars just became 5% cheaper in Australia.
The UK is keeping tariffs on Australian agricultural products for up to 15 years

The cognitive dissonance of remainers:
"Importing cheaper food via EU FTA's is good for consumers"
"Importing cheaper food via Australia FTA is bad for farmers"

Captain Flip flop AKA Kier Starmer is now saying there is no going back into the EU.
This is only because he knows that there could be no referendum without a manifesto commitment to hold one, and he doesn't believe Labour would win an election with such a commitment.
The man who moved heaven and Earth to overturn Brexit knows there is no Bregret.

UK debt isn't payable in one go, but is payable over a number of years, some of it being payable to the government itself.
It is France that has seen it's credit rating downgraded
It is Italy that has seen it's manufacturing sector shrink at it's fastest rate in 3 years
And it's Gemany that is in recession, with high inflation and negative real wages.
And where price adjusted retail sales fell 8.6%

Being reported all week on tv:
Shortage of doctors and nurses
Health service underfunded
Not enough modern hospitals
Massive reform needed

Immigration is still up though, I was thinking if we can have special constables in the police, wouldn't it be wise to have special border officers too?, that would help with the backlog?

The more trade deals the UK signs the harder it will be for Rejoiners to mount a credible case for the EU.
I recently read Tim Shipman's book "BREXIT All Out War" on the 2016 referendum and found 2 very startling facts:
1. Remain polling was fudged throughout the campaign to be overly optimistic
2. Will Straw (Remain Campaign Head) admits that if Remain had attempted to run a 'positive' campaign they would not managed 48% hence the negative Project fear campaign.
There is no way Rejoiners will never manage a positive campaign bearing in mind the terms that would be on offer, not least joining the euro,
