The independent UK has committed more than the top 5 EU countries combined

It’s little wonder President Zelenskyy considers the newly-independent United Kingdom to be Ukraine’s No.1 ally in Europe. In today’s report we reveal the wide disparity between the UK’s response to Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, and that of EU countries.

Using data from the aid tracker from Germany’s Institute for the World Economy in Kiel, Facts4EU.Org looks at the UK’s response to Ukraine’s calls for help, compared with the responses of EU countries.

The EU’s major economies do not come out of this well

Any comparison of the military help given to Ukraine paints a poor picture for the vast majority of EU27 countries.

In particular, the EU’s largest economy Germany has committed less than 30% of the UK’s total – and most of that still has not arrived. The EU’s second-largest economy France, under President Macron, has committed less than 6% of the UK’s total. For Italy it’s less than 4%.

Macron’s ‘jaw-jaw’ hasn’t stopped Putin from waging ‘war-war’

The French President has spoken many times on the subject of Ukraine. He has visited Moscow to hold a meeting with Putin and has held innumerable calls with him. The photo above is genuine. It comes directly from the Kremlin and is perhaps one of the most striking images showing how the Russian President has a trouibling power complex.

If Emmanuel Macron thought he could persuade Vladimir Putin to stop his illegal war, the best that can be said is that this was naïve.

Instead of pulling back, Putin has doubled down, issuing a call-up of 300,000 reservists to bolster his failing army occupying part of Ukraine. All of Macron’s initiatives have fallen on deaf ears.

An important note about the German data

Germany’s Institute for the World Economy in Kiel is only tracking military and financial commitments by countries since Putin invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022.

The figures we have shown above therefore do not include the UK’s six years of commitments to Ukraine prior to the outbreak of war. In 2015, following Putin’s illegal invasion and annexation of Crimea, the United Kingdom started training the Ukrainian army. Many thousands of officers and soldiers were trained by UK military personnel and this process continues to this day.

None of these additional costs are included in the German data. If they were, the numbers would be even more embarrassing for the EU.

Observations

We are aware that some readers do not approve of the UK Government’s stance on Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. We also know that some people would prefer a response to Putin akin to Chamberlain’s and the Establishment’s response to Hitler in the late 1930’s.

We have our views and all competing views are valid and should be aired. In keeping with our facts-based philosophy, our report above merely sets out a comparison between the UK’s response to date to Putin’s aggression, and that of the UK’s largest economies.

Finally, it is worth noting that it has been the smaller countries in the East who have given far more as a percentage of their GDP in support of Ukraine than have the larger nations in the EU.
