Meanwhile UK continues to send heavy weaponry and to train Ukrainian forces

New German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been attacked again, for failing to support Ukraine with the weapons it needs. Conversely, in a call with President Zellenskyy yesterday Boris Johnson promised more weapons and more training of Ukrainian troops.

Last week Mr Scholz promised heavy weaponry for Ukraine in its life and death struggle against the invading army of President Putin. This pledge was not for gifts of tanks, armoured fighting vehicles and Howitzer artillery, but for German arms manufacturers to be able to sell these to Ukraine.

Now it seems Herr Scholz has retreated. Not only has Germany stopped sending serious military hardware to Ukraine because its forces are so ill-equipped, but he has now rolled back on his pledge by crossing heavy equipment off the list that German arms companies can sell to the beleaguered country.

Ukrainian MPs are deeply unimpressed

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government continues its praise for British leadership

Below is the tweet from President Zellenskyy’s office, following the phone call Boris Johnson made to him yesterday afternoon.

No.10 released a statement following the call:

“The Prime Minister confirmed that the UK is providing more defensive military aid, including protected mobility vehicles, drones and anti-tank weapons.

“President Zelenskyy thanked the Prime Minister for the training of Ukrainian military personnel currently taking place in the UK.”

Desperately sad in Odesa – this is the terrible reality of Putin’s wanton war crimes

Below is a picture of new mum Valeria Hlodan and her 3-month-old daughter Kira, killed by Russian forces yesterday. Kira’s grandmother was also killed in the missile attack on Odesa, launched from a Russian warship in the Black Sea.

“She was a mom. She is no more. And neither is her 3 months old baby girl Kira.

“They were 2 of the 6 killed by Russia’s missile in Odesa. 18 were wounded.”

Observations

Never before has the Black Sea so grotesquely deserved its name. For Putin to order his naval forces to launch random missile strikes on Ukraine - and in this case Odesa - killing many including 3 month old Kira, her mother Valeria, and her grandmother, is an act of almost unspeakable barbarity. This is not an isolated incident but it brings home the tragic reality of what has been taking place in Europe in the last two months.

The United Kingdom has led from the front ever since Putin invaded the Ukrainian area of Crimea in 2014, training Ukraine’s military and providing weapons. Germany, by contrast, has been very late on the scene.

The EU's powerhouse is sorely lacking in power

Even when Olaf Scholz finally decided to allow military supplies to be sent to Ukraine, it transpired that within weeks these had to be stopped because the Bundeswehr (German military) was running out of weapons.

The German Chancellor’s next action was to say that Ukraine could buy weapons from German arms manufacturers direct. Now it seems that heavy weaponry such as mobile howitzers are excluded from that list.

Faced with increasingly strident criticism from other EU countries and even from his own people, it is surely inevitable that the Chancellor of the EU’s leading country will have to retreat yet again.
