72% of last year’s increase is due to Romanians and Bulgarians

Last week the Office for National Statistics reported on its latest estimates for the UK population by country of birth and nationality in 2019. As ever, Brexit Facts4EU.Org has analysed the data and can now bring readers some interesting and up-to-date facts about the official estimates for population and for immigration.

Warning: What follows will not be seen on the BBC, Sky News, or ITN. It contains the latest official facts about immigration, from the UK and EU official agencies.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

EU nationals and the UK population in 2019

  • Non-British population of the United Kingdom in 2019 : 6.2 million
  • This means just under 1 in 10 of the UK population had a non-British nationality
  • The majority (60%) of these came from the EU (3.7 million)

Note: The above figures are from the UK’s Office for National Statistics. It is the ONS that grouped 'Asia' and 'Rest of the World', not us. The EU’s official statistics agency puts the number of EU27 residents in the UK at 3.86 million - broadly in line with the ONS' estimate. The Brexit Facts4EU.Org view has always been that the numbers are in fact higher.

How has the proportion of EU nationals in the UK population changed?

This century the nature of immigration into the United Kingdom has changed radically. When eight poorer countries from the former Soviet Union and communist Yugoslavia joined the EU in 2004, immigration to the UK rocketed. It then soared again when Romania and Bulgaria joined and when those nationals were allowed to come to the UK.

  • The number of EU nationals now resident in the UK has more than trebled since 2004
  • The number of non-EU nationals residing in the UK has increased by only 34%

EU immigration in 2019

The increase in the EU27 population of the UK resumed its upward trend in 2019, following a small dip in 2018.

  • Number of EU27 nationals resident in the UK in 2019 increased by 75,000
  • 72% of this increase was due to Romanians and Bulgarians
  • There are now over half a million (570,000) Romanians and Bulgarians living in the UK
  • Their population in the UK has grown by more than 16 times in the last 12 years

It is a simple fact that the number of EU27 nationals resident in the United Kingdom
is far greater than the rest of the world and it increased once again in 2019…….. “despite Brexit”.

Finally, why are the numbers of National Insurance registrations so high for EU nationals?

Several times over the past five years we have pointed out the disparity between N.I. numbers – required by immigrants to work or to receive benefits in the UK – and the numbers of those who have supposedly entered the country.

We always took a particular interest in these N.I. numbers issued by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and questioned these numbers many times. Without an N.I. number an immigrant cannot work legally, nor can they claim any sickness or unemployment benefits, nor indeed can they claim any of the many in-work benefits now on offer.

In this sense these numbers are a very important barometer of reality.

The numbers of N.I. numbers issued by HMRC and the Dept for Work and Pensions have always been far higher than the number of EU nationals reported to have entered the country by the Office for National Statistics. We took a look at the figures released last week.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

Massive numbers of N.I. numbers issued to EU nationals in 2019

  • In the year to March 2020, HMRC report ¾ million (757,749) new N.I. registrations of overseas nationals
  • 430,126 of these were EU nationals - that’s 57% of the total
  • Of the 757,749, the highest number by far were Romanians

Context is important

  • Romania is a country of 19 million people out of 445 million in the EU27, no shared history or culture with the UK
  • Romanians were responsible for 124,270 of the UK's new N.I. numbers last year
  • India is a country of 1,353 million people, 150 years of shared history, member of Commonwealth, shared language
  • Indians were responsible for only 87,706 of the UK's new N.I. numbers last year

Per head of population, Romanians are over 100 times more likely than Indians
to be issued with a UK National Insurance number.

[Statistical note: Yes, we have read every article on population, immigration, and N.I. statistics issued by the ONS, DWP, HMRC and others. The issues are complex because of the lack of standard reporting mechanisms and the fact that the Government has singularly failed for decades to control the UK’s borders or to count people in and out. Nevertheless the information we have provided above all comes from these official sources.]

Observations

Five years ago we were slightly reluctant to research and publish anything on immigration

Five years ago Brexiteers were routinely being labelled as racists and xenophobes. We never saw it that way at all. Our experience of Brexiteers was they were outward-looking people, friendly to all, and simply wanting to live in an independent country which controlled its own borders in a normal way. “Love Europe, love the World, hate the EU” about summed it up.

When we describe “an independent country which controlled its own borders in a normal way”, we are talking about ‘normal’ as far as the rest of the world is concerned. This is not the same as the interpretation which the UK’s metropolitan ‘elites’ and luvvies choose to put on this.

Any suggestion that uncontrolled immigration has caused a problem to communities up and down the country has been greeted with highly-disparaging comments such as “gammon”, “privileged white”, “white van drivers”, “little Englanders” etc by Remainers. Sadly it never seemed to occur to any of these Remainers that many of their comments about Brexiteers were in themselves racist.

Our view has always been simple. You do not need to be a Government scientist to know that a surge of more than 2.5 million immigrants from the EU in the last 15 years was going to put a strain on housing, schools, health, social services, and the transport network, to say nothing of the downward pressure on wages.

It is perfectly possible to comment on the global figures, without any animosity towards individuals who have chosen to make their home in the United Kingdom.

The hijacking of real hate crime

In the last few years, so-called “hate crime” has become an issue. We are not talking about real hate crime here of course, but about the absurd definitions now being used by the police and the Crown Prosecution Service. Real hate crime really is a crime and the full force of the law should be brought to bear.

That is not what we are talking about here. Here we are talking about snowflakey, imagined hurt feelings, where someone can report a 'hate crime' even if they were not involved in any way whatsoever. They can claim they were ‘hurt’ by something which was written on social media when they were not party to the conversation and when they don't even know any of the participants. The police are required to record this as a hate crime and in most cases they go and interview the person or group accused by the non-victim.

Give us strength….

In our opinion the new laws demean and undermine real hate crime towards minorities. These new laws - and specifically their interpretation by the police and the CPS - are a disgrace and need to be amended drastically as quickly as possible. We felt that the situation had become so bad that we had to write about it, so two years ago we produced a six-part series to warn readers what they were now faced with. (We only veer off our specialist subjects of Brexit and the EU when we really feel it is essential to do so.)

This article above presents facts from the ONS, DWP, HMRC, and the EU Commission. Facts are important. Facts guide our decisions - or they should.
