Thereafter : Positive agenda to act fast

Note: Radical thinking will be required to effect this, but this is now a national emergency. See below.

In two weeks’ time, we shall all be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings on 06 June 1944.

The planning for the invasion of a continent - and for the crucial start of Operation Overlord to take the Normandy beaches - had started just one year earlier. The operation involved 160,000 men on D-Day alone.

By contrast, Mrs May has been in charge of Operation Brexit since 13 July 2016. That’s nearly three years ago and almost three times as long as it took to plan and execute the start of the Allied invasion of Europe.

Forget a ‘timetable for departure’, May must quit today

Theresa May’s premiership has been an unmitigated disaster for Brexit, for the Conservative Party, and for the country. Yes, we accept that as Conservative MPs some of you may not agree with this so we will just have to let history judge.

What matters now is that the majority of your party finally seem to agree that she must go. And what is needed now is immediate action to effect this.

We suspect that Mrs May – assuming she makes her announcement today – will once again try to push the tired, dented, old can down the road. We will no doubt hear of a ‘timetable’ which will stretch out over months.

Unfortunately we don’t have months
We barely even have weeks

Last chance for the Conservative Party

Urgent action to change your leader is required. You must all accept by now that one of the faults of the Prime Minister is that she has made procrastination into an contorted art form. This must not be allowed to continue.

Today she must announce her resignation, with a short notice period for a new leader to be chosen. Mrs May must not be allowed to decide the notice period. She must resign and say that the appropriate party bodies will decide the timetable. She must confirm that she will step down the moment a new leader has been chosen.

The Party must urgently review its procedures and do whatever it takes to accelerate the election of a new leader and Prime Minister. By this we mean thowing out months of lengthy consultations, campaigning around the country, hustings, and manoeuverings in Parliament.

This may be the bread and butter of politics to you,
but to the rest of us this is simply indigestible

This all needs to be condensed dramatically. If this involves the 1922 Committee changing the process, and/or holding an EGM of the Party Members, so be it.

Our suggested ‘timetable’ to replace Mrs May’s timetable

We suggest that a maximum of five weeks be allowed for the entire process. This would mean a new Prime Minister being installed by Friday 28 June 2019. In the business world this would be entirely feasible.

Allowing a long weekend for ministerial appointments to be made, the new Cabinet could then meet on Tuesday 02 July. This is the same day as the first sitting of the new EU Parliament.

Because of all the dithering to date, we can’t see how it can now be avoided that our new MEPs will have to take their seats – something which was unconscionable only a couple of months ago.

The Brexit timetable

Under our suggested plan of the new Cabinet meeting on 02 July, there would be just 122 days ( 3½ months) until 31 October – the end of the extension period of Article 50.

We propose that all MPs stop thinking about recesses – whether in Westminster or in Brussels. The actions of the EU in demanding a surrender treaty, the actions of the UK Parliament, and Mrs May’s appalling leadership in particular, has now made this into a national emergency.

In business, none of us would be thinking of going on holiday at a time like this. Nor should those in whom the British people have placed their trust with their votes.

With true leadership everything is possible

For months MPs have said to us “Yes, but changing the leader won’t change the parliamentary arithmetic.”

We have always begged to differ.

In business and in the military, true leadership is not only essential for success, it also changes the landscape and the future. We have an immediate plan for this too, but that’s for another article.

We suggest that replacing Mrs May with a real, pro-Brexit leader could not only work miracles, it could also save the Conservative Party from complete annihilation. We are party-neutral as a group, but this may be something foremost in your own minds.

Frankly, things are now at a point where many people believe that only a miracle will save the oldest political party in the world.

For now, all we would like to see is the miracle of the Parliamentary Conservative Party acting with vigour and decisiveness today, a definitive resignation by Mrs May, and an accelerated timetable to choose a new leader by 02 July 2019.

Impossible? Remember the D-Day landings

They were only delayed by one day, due to very bad weather. They went ahead the next day and success was the only option.

I agree with your proposed timetable: practical and achievable.
Imo the most important thing for our politicians to do is to break (in William Blake's words) "the mind forg'd manacles" The will, desire and intention to change from the mindset of "we can't", to "we can."
As I was about to post this I've had half an ear on former MP David Mellor being interviewed on Sky, who has rubbished the Leave vote and voters: we believed a slogan on a bus......

Well said Facts4eu, my own timetable would be slightly different I would have a new Leaver as PM within a week. I fail to see how difficult it is to round up all Conservatives in a room, announce the failure of the present government's leadership. Announce her resignation in utter disgrace at her record. Then immediately go to a vote, the answer could be made within the hour if the political will was there.

We will be ridiculed by MPs for suggesting a period as short as 5 weeks. One week would be great, but even 5 weeks would involve a revolution for those in Westminster! We aimed for a reasonable compromise.

Loyalty to a Party, above Country, that has wilfully ignored democracy & its own electorate, abused & disregarded our Constitution, repeatedly lied to the House as well as the people, is not a quality to be admired. Most people regard this as being complicit. They appear to be as deluded as the EU fanatics, persuading themselves that the Party what they think it to be, or was in the past, rather than what it is in reality.
We now know that there are only about 25 true Conservatives who believe in upholding democracy & our law who could be trusted in power. Others have been shown willing to sacrifice our Country, by agreeing to surrender to a foreign power. How could anyone ever trust them to act in our interests again? Above all, we want to see honesty & integrity in those elected.
What exactly did they expect to happen with a remainer PM, remainer Cabinet & remainer Snivel Serpents 'negotiating' our leaving the EU?
Toxic Theresa has now glued herself to the inside door of no.10 & they're still unwilling to take affirmative action. Some have finally stopped rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic and are belatedly scrambling for the life rafts, but will that stop the ship from sinking?
They thought that it would go back to 'business as normal' by now. What they, & I mean most Parliamentarians (bar 29), have failed to acknowledge is that people have seen that the only real vote that really meant something & where every vote really did count, in the largest democratic exercise in our history, is being wilfully overturned for their EU masters contrary to their pre-election 'promises'. I could write a similar statement for the opposition Party. Such treachery will not be forgotten or forgiven.

I think May should go today before she can do anymore damage to the country and democracy. My favoured replacement would be John Redwood,he has stuck to his guns and been for leaving from day one. All in cabinet at some stage have supported May's surrender treaty,could we trust them to take us out? not sure.I believe Redwood would honour the referendum result and could even save the Tory party. Just my views

Tory, I agree. Given the opportunity and some time, John Redwood would have a good chance to rebuild the long lost trust. So far Redwood seems to be principle driven. I also think that he would put together a good negotiating team and would be willing to consult and listen not just to competent MPs but anyone who does actually know what they're talking about in different areas. For him knowledge and competence would be the bases of appointing, and not somewhat weird kind of personal preferences like in the case of Theresa May.

An eminently sensible and practical proposal, which means the advice is not likely to be taken as this government has rarely done anything either sensible or practical. Oh, I tell a lie -- I think they did manage to save the remaining 18 circus animals in Britain from enduring further cruelty... didn't they? Anyway, I digress.
I have no great hopes that this matter will be resolved quickly. I would be surprised if it were. The Tories, if not Parliament as a whole, still seem to be in denial over the extent to which they have negligently (if not willfully, in many cases -- especially on the Remoaner side) ripped apart the very fabric of our society with their "we know best" power games.
The end result, I believe, is that we will indeed "crash out" on the 31st October, but only because the Tories will still be squabbling among themselves under whichever PM they force upon us (I seriously doubt they will succeed in uniting the party any more than it has been); the Civil Service will still be doing its damnedest to keep us in the EU; and preparations for a proper WTO Brexit will still be far from complete, woefully underfunded, and a total shambles.
But we will finally be free, and this government will shortly after be reduced to taking up a much smaller portion of the opposition benches -- and likely for many years to come. Our future prosperity will then depend on which party replaces them.

We differ with her in our determination not to enter into vassalage and become a Colony of the European Union.
