“Indicative vote? A stitch-up to Remain? Leave must mean Leave!”

Is the new round of indicative votes just Groundhog Day again? No it’s much more serious.

Having failed to get her deal over the line and reluctant to try again, it seems the PM will bring a series of indicative votes on Brexit options to the House of Commons once more. Third time lucky?

This time the proposal is that votes should be cumulative. So, given that there is one option for Leave and lots of options for Remain, how is that democratic or even representative of the will of the people let alone the House, which is slowly waking up to the fact that the country won’t have this stitch-up?!

So what might these “Brexit” options be?

And which ones will the all powerful Mr Speaker allow votes on?

No doubt attempts will be made to exclude a no deal WTO outcome, arguing that this has already been ruled out. Oh no it hasn’t!

We just need a strong leader to deliver it. On the table it must stay!

A customs union - however you want to describe or mis-describe it - will be there - so far the most popular option across the House. Yet this option, specifically ruled out by both major parties in their manifestos, will prevent us from entering into new trade deals with third-party countries, thereby removing the financial Brexit dividend at a stroke. I can’t see the Single Market being on the ballot paper but you never know.

And then there will be the spoiler options - a second referendum, an affirmative vote, not no deal - or not leaving at all by revoking article 50.

Whatever comes of these indicative votes, where does it take us?

If any option is picked other than no deal, new legislation will have to go through all stages in both Houses. I can’t see this being any more realistic an option to achieve than the current deal. Unless of course Theresa May, the chief whip, and Mr Speaker stitch it up by ignoring long-standing precedents and creating new ones.

Would they? Dare they?

So Groundhog Day goes full circle and we start again.

This great country of ours cannot wait forever for an answer. While our economy remains remarkably robust, businesses need to make investment decisions and soon. To do that they need certainty. The small businesses in Britain are taking the brunt of this uncertainty as their customers freeze their order books. Any indicative vote is not going to deliver Brexit, if it delivers anything at all.

This is now serious. No Brexit, no faith in politics or politicians, democracy at risk, a government that cannot govern - it has no working majority - how much worse can it get?

There is only one very simple way forward to a better brighter future - a prime minister with the courage to deliver no deal. No deal, no fuss, no uncertainty, no more Groundhog Day. The mistake was ever to try to make Brexit anything other than binary.

Leave really does mean Leave - let’s get on with it!

Anne Marie Morris has been the MP for Newton Abbot in Devon since 2010 when she took the seat from the LibDems. In that time she has grown her majority consistently, from 523 votes in 2010, to 11,288 in 2015, to 17,160 in 2017. This is an extraordinary performance from any MP.

Ms Morris was the only pro-Brexit Conservative MP not to back the Brady amendment on 29 Jan 2019. All other members of the ERG did so. In voting against this amendment, Ms Morris defied the party whip.

This ‘Brady’ amendment effectively accepted the Prime Minister’s atrocious Withdrawal Agreement (WA), and asked for “alternative arrangements to avoid a hard border”. In simple terms this means accepting all the unacceptable aspects of the WA, provided a compromise could be reached on the Backstop.

Observations

Anne Marie Morris is quite right to highlight the dangers of a ‘stitch-up to Remain’. Newspapers are being told by ‘Government sources’ that Mrs May will impose a series of ‘definitive votes’ in the coming two weeks if an agreement is not reached with Labour.

This is one decent MP, intelligent and patriotic. I hope she and all the other decent MP's can keep their seats. There are a huge majority that deserve to lose their seats as the very minimum punishment for medocrity to be very polite. There are a few that in different times would already be waiting in the 'Tower'.
Until this situation changes I don't see any future success for Great Britain.

Well said AMM. Parliament has become a laughing stock worldwide. Mother of Parliaments, bastion of democracy?
Instead of certainty, remainers in Parliament deliberately create uncertainty.
My nephew is a Director of a small company in Devon which does import/export to/from the EU. He voted remain. He was disappointed at the result, but accepted the result. ONE WEEK after the referendum in June 2016, his company had had a meeting & refocused the business to take advantage of new opportunities. It's fair to say, that they were now positively looking forward to the 'new world'. That was nearly three years ago.
Like most companies at that time, the analysis was based on a clean break.
These companies have been left dangling by the anti-democrats in Parliament trying to subvert the decision. People & businesses have been prepared for nearly three years. It's only the EU Agents in Parliament trying to stop things. The people's anger about their betrayal of democracy is real.

What May pushes and what indicative vote Parliament passes is irrelevant. I say this because Barnier and the Commission have already stitched up our Prime Minister.
The Council of 27 are holding firm in that the Withdrawal Agreement is sealed. Should Parliament decide what it wants, it will have to be negotiated in the Political Declaration after the signing and under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement.
But, we are getting ahead of Parliamentary agreement as Labour is almost certain to demand a confirmatory Peoples vote.
The withdrawal Agreement is a leap in the dark, there is no guaranteed outcome. Should we get there we will not have left the EU.
Guardian Article: At an Institute for Government seminar, Lord Ricketts said the next phase of Brexit would be so complex and time consuming that it would make Theresa May’s current crisis look like “a relatively simple, straightforward affair”.
He predicted negotiations are likely to go on for years and “encompass pretty much the entire of Whitehall”, with detailed negotiations expected in everything from trade and financial services to data transfer, transport, fisheries and nuclear and gas supply.
Tim Durrant, co-author of the IfG’s report Negotiating Brexit, preparing for talks on the UK’s future relationship with the EU, says the forthcoming negotiations will be of a scale and complexity unseen in the UK since the country joined the common market in the 1970s.
Any attempt in government to proscribe a type of Brexit, whether Norwayplus or a Canada-style deal, would be a gift to the EU if combined with a parliamentary ban on a no-deal exit.
A unilateral declaration that we will leave and trade on WTO terms shortcuts all this. The trouble is the WIMPS in Parliament insist on a complex EU written deal.

Well said, Ann, your principles and integrity shine through -- more so because of the distinct lack of same in Parliament in general. It's a real shame that your party has to all intents and purposes been effectively doomed by this appalling PM and its Remainer / BRINO majority of MPs, but I cannot say its ultimate fate is not well deserved.
I cling to the hope that you, with your obvious intelligence, integrity and clarity of thought, will be the first to realise that joining The Brexit Party is the only way to go. Your party are no longer true conservatives, which is why it has lost the support of the bulk of its own membership. Moreover, there will be a definite limit to the number of existing MPs that TBP will be able to absorb and still remain true to its own principles and stated intention of "Changing Politics For Good"... Please don't leave it too late -- our country needs you.

With the Tory EU election campaign trying to blame the 28 Eurosceptics for the failure to leave the EU on 29th March, what price loyalty? Priti Patel clearly was not amused.
Anne Marie, don't waste your time and talents further - the Tories will never have the backbone to remove May and her chums. And even if they do, it is now too late for the Tory Party - for the public now have their measure, know the vast majority of them for the traitorous, self-serving anti-democrats that they are, and will throw them out.
As Julie says, the Brexit Party is the only way to go.
Best if the 28 true Brexiteers leave the Tories en masse, and bring this hopeless quisling government down. Now, this month.

I wish people would stop calling it a WA (Withdrawal agreement) - it is a Treaty and a very bad one for Britain. In fact I would say it is tantamount to treason.
What should have happened on the 24th June 2016, was that the UK had left the EU. The so-called 'negotiations' could then have taken place at the glacial pace that the eu and our so-called 'civil service' move at.
I am simply disgusted that the so-called conservatives have not delivered! They should have got rid of the PM as soon as she lost their damn majority!
Myself I think it is just a circus so the left can ruin the country, the job is nigh on done.

What a ludicrous article. Wrecksiteers will cripple the UK economy, actually diminish all world UK influence, probably cause us to become Little England as Scotland becomes independent, certainly cause major international as well as UK companies to move their HQ’s abroad ( as has already been happening and the Dutch are rubbing their hands in glee as hundreds have already set up there) Increase our cost of living, weaken the pound yet again ..... there are almost zero upsides to any leave campaign. I really can’t understand how intelligent people can want to blow a hole in a united Europe, help Putin to undermine our continent, and ruin our UK for the very long term future. It defies belief.

You have an awful lot to learn, NALB.
I suggest you read Facts4EU articles more often.
The main point that you are missing is the rather inconvenient concept for Remainers called 'Democracy'.
'Sovereignty', 'Freedom' and 'Free Trade' might be other words to become more familiar with.
Also 'respect', 'open-minded', 'discerning' and 'progressive' might help.
And if all else fails, how about 'Brexit Party 34% - ChangeUK 3%' !

NALB -- and any other Remainers reading this -- do yourself a favour and go to the BBC iplayer site, search 'Brexit Behind Closed Doors' and watch that (and Part 2, if you haven't by then shook your head in utter disbelief at just how badly you've been taken for a fool by the EU), then come back here and explain to us precisely why you are still right and we are still wrong.
If nothing else, it will be an education and an eye-opener, I promise you.
