CAUGHT IN MAY'S BREXIT WEB

MPs have already had their extension

Over the past three years we have written some 2,000 pieces on Brexit. We have even indexed over 1,000 of these in our exclusive Brexit Index – the largest repository of Brexit facts in the World.

The Democratic Deficit Disorder

Looking back, it’s interesting to note how many of our articles had our belief in democracy at their root. Today, with Mrs May having returned from Brussels with yet another can-kicking completed, it seems we must focus again on democracy.

Three things happened yesterday. Firstly, a public petition to Parliament reached 2 million signatures. This petition asks Parliament to revoke Article 50, thereby cancelling Brexit. The BBC were very keen on this story. All we will say to the Remoaners who work for Auntie Beeb is: “Get back to us when they’ve got to 17.4 million.”

Keep Calm and Just Brexit

The second event was the news that MPs have been warned by the Deputy Speaker about their personal security again. This immediately puts us in a dilemma.

On the one hand we see this as snowflakes whining that – surprise, surprise – they’re not very popular with the public. On the other hand there are real extremists in every part of society and of course our MPs must be protected from the tiny minority who might become violent. Free speech yes. Any real intimidation no.

Blame Culture… Moi?

The EU has been talking a lot about blame recently, in that they want to apportion blame for the Brexit fiasco onto the British. As blame culture is in the air we will simply say that the current atmosphere in the UK has mostly been caused by Referendum losers not being immediately ridiculed for refusing to accept the result.

This has allowed a culture to develop of the questioning of every standard and value we have traditionally held to be sacrosanct. This sad development is one of the reasons we expect extraordinary moves in Parliament next week by Remain MPs, indulged and possibly even encouraged by a Speaker who wears his Remoaner credentials like a (car-)badge of honour.

Can, Road, Aim, Kick!

The third event of note was of course the latest can-kicking exercise of Mrs May. The media are full of the various dates which have been proposed, rejected, and amended. As ever, at Brexit Facts4EU.Org we will look above this.

The simple fact is that the Brexit we voted for was due to be enacted on 24 June last year, 2018. This date was two years after the EU Referendum. Readers will recall that our then Prime Minister promised in advance that he would invoke Article 50 “the next day”. Instead he went to ground, and then resigned.

Brexit is already almost nine months overdue. We expected it two years after the Referendum, at the latest. That’s 272 days ago. Babies have been conceived and born in that time.

Following Mrs May’s eventual invocation of Article 50 the revised delivery date was then 29 March 2019. That’s one week today.

EU Summit Conclusions

Yesterday evening the unelected EU Council President Donald Tusk issued two statements.

Here are the conclusions of the EU Summit of 27 leaders, regarding Brexit.

And here is the statement by Donald Tusk himself.

Mr Tusk’s statement ends as follows :-

“This is why I met Prime Minister May several times tonight – to make sure that the UK accepts the extension scenarios – and I am pleased to confirm that we have reached an agreement on this.”

Now we are facing the Government proposing an extension until 12 April, and then possibly until 22 May. Interestingly both of these dates have been ordered by 27 foreign powers, not chosen by the UK Government.

Observations

Message to the Prime Minister : Enough

Theresa May got one thing right in her speech to the nation on Wednesday evening.

“And of this I am absolutely sure: you the public have had enough.”

Too damn right we’ve had enough.

The existing legal position is that the UK leaves the EU on Friday 29 March 2019.

We see no reason to alter this in any way. You’ve already had your extension, Mrs May. You delayed the invocation of Article 50 by nine months, achieving absolutely nothing along the way.

Enough really is enough. We must leave as you have repeatedly promised to the British people, next Friday.
