Unelected EU Council President Tusk tweets, forgetting that EU is now supposed to be democratic

EU Council President reveals who decides on next EU Commission President

This isn't democracy, it's 'realpolitik'

Donald Tusk seems to have forgotten that the EU is now pretending to be democratic. Instead, he tweeted a picture of him negotiating with Germany’s Angela Merkel and France’s Emmanuel Macron yesterday.

Their argument is about who should be the next President of the EU Commission after Jean-Claude Juncker.

Currently President Macron of France is at loggerheads with Chancellor Merkel of Germany. We won’t bore readers with the details, but in essence Frau Merkel wants the German MEP Manfred Weber to be the new Commission President after Jean-Claude Juncker departs in a few months' time. Macron wants a 'liberal'.

The last time an EU Commission President was chosen, (Jean-Claude Juncker), the UK and Hungary voted against him, but were over-ruled by Germany and 25 smaller countries than the UK. The United Kingdom had no veto on the most powerful position in the EU Commission. David Cameron's claims of UK sovereignty did not seem to apply and the result was an EU Commission President who pronounced on 24 June 2016 that "this will not be an amicable divorce".

Observations

The United Kingdom can’t get out of this undemocratic and dysfunctional mess fast enough.

After over 60 years, the EU still can’t find a way to be democratic. In the end a fudge will be agreed between a few of 'the elite', as it always is, and our best guess is that Frau Merkel will get her way as Germany pays far more than France into the EU’s coffers.

If Monsieur Macron wins it will be at the cost of a raft of EU measures which France has been resisting for years, and which it will then have to follow.
