For the main Cabinet of 22 members it’s worse – 64% voted Remain

Despite the narrative which readers will have heard yesterday and will no doubt hear again today, the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed an official Cabinet dominated by ministers who voted Remain in the 2016 EU Referendum. 64% of them voted to stay in the EU.

Even when accounting for ministers who are not officially part of the Cabinet, but who are invited to attend at the behest of the Prime Minister, well over half of the 31 people seated around the table voted Remain in 2016.

A quick Brexit Facts4EU.Org explainer: There is an official Cabinet of (currently) the Prime Minister plus 21 Secretaries of State or Ministers. Then there are ministers who are invited to attend each time, but who aren't officially part of the Cabinet. We have shown both above, separated out.

On a more positive note, a barnstorming speech from Boris

After years of the most boring, repetitive and depressing speeches from the outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May, the speech given by Boris Johnson outside No.10 yesterday was transformational.

You can watch it again below.

How Brexit Facts4EU.Org defines the Cabinet

In the last four years we have produced summaries of the Cabinet on the basis of how its constituent members voted in the EU Referendum of 2016. We have never reflected any subsequent changes of position after politicians realised that they had been on the losing side.

We did this several times under the tenure of Mrs May as Prime Minister, as her Cabinet changed due to sackings and resignations, and compared it to the 52:48 result of the referendum.

At no time did the proportion of her pro-Remain cabinet ministers fall below 70%.

Statistical note : We have used the announcements made by No.10 on its Twitter feed yesterday. The summary of the new appointments is not yet available on the Government’s official website, but the information we have presented is summarised from the individual appointment announcements made by No.10.

There is just one member of Cabinet whose position is not entirely clear and that is the Leader of the House of Lords, Baroness Evans. We have shown her as a Remain supporter based on past research but we note that some media outlets overnight refer to her as a Leave voter. We stand ready to be corrected, but it does not change the overall thrust of this article.

Observations

We wish the new Boris Johnson administration well as it prepares to tackle the biggest issue of our time: Brexit.

The country finally has a Prime Minister who campaigned to leave the European Union, and he has appointed colleagues who were with him in this fight.

The new Cabinet is a distinct improvement on the cabinets of Mrs May in the last three years. Over the coming days Mr Johnson will appoint junior ministers and we will be looking at these. We very much hope that some very talented and experienced pro-Brexit MPs will be on his list.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org continues its policy of being party-neutral but welcomes the first sight of positive and dynamic leadership towards a bright, post-Brexit future. We are in for some interesting times considering the make-up of the House of Commons, and we are actively engaged in initiatives with other Brexit organisations to ensure that Brexit is delivered.

Please help us to keep going at this critical time, with a donation. We only have you, ordinary members of the public. The Remain side is very well-funded, including large donations from foreign individuals and organisations. Thank you if you can help. Quick, secure donation methods are below.

If it helps you to decide whether to support our work, please remember one thing. Our new Prime Minister Boris Johnson voted for Theresa May's surrender treaty known as "the Withdrawal Agreement"...
