FORGET ARITHMETIC, DEFEND DEMOCRACY

We must fight on for Brexit

A Brexit Facts4EU.Org Sunday Editorial

Reading the newspapers and watching TV news, one might be forgiven for thinking that the fate of Brexit is all about “Parliamentary arithmetic”.

It is easy to lose track of the various votes on ‘amendments’ by our MPs, and consequently bar-chart graphics are helpfully provided showing how the various votes broke down.

One newspaper even has its own scoring system for MPs, based on what they perceive as the importance of each vote and where this puts an MP on a sliding scale of anti-Brexitism.

The amendments are given names such as “Cooper-Bowles”. This reminded us of some newly-discovered comet which is expected to pass through our solar system in the near future. Sadly unlike most comets, these ones visit rather more frequently than once every 1,000 years.

Comet

Indeed, the infamous Cooper-Bowles is expected to make a return visit in just 10 days’ time, on 14 February, when Yvette Cooper (constituency Leave majority 69.3%) will once again stand up and try to persuade her fellow MPs to put Brexit on hold.

We’re on the side of the people

The Brexit Facts4EU.Org team are not, on the whole, very interested in the minutiae of Parliamentary arithmetic.

Instead we’re more interested in the question “Is Brexit going to be delivered?” Last summer it was obvious that the answer to this would in the end be predicated on whether our MPs believed in democracy or not.

We immediately launched a public campaign – before Chequers – to persuade Ministers not to back what we suspected Mrs May was going to foist on them unannounced and without the knowledge of the DExEU ministers.

As we all know, the Cabinet caved in, with only David Davis and Boris Johnson resigning.

It was this question about MPs and democracy which was the motivation behind the production of our ‘Brexit Battle Pack’ – a comprehensive set of tools for contacting MPs and the media, to tell them that the Referendum vote must be delivered in full. The Pack was soon backed by 12 other pro-Brexit organisations, has been widely used, and is growing in popularity.

Campaigning and action

We went on to produce leaflets – one-page flyers – with a signature area at the bottom so that the public could simply sign and post these to their MPs. You can review and download some of these here.

Finally in early December we started on the #GoWTO campaign. The purpose was to tell MPs that “WTO is the way to go”. We simply did not believe there was any time left to negotiate a formal withdrawal arrangement with the EU, because Theresa May and her team had already allowed the EU to think they could treat us like a colony after our departure.

This had of course been our position all along, well before the PM’s disastrous draft treaty was even thought of. It has always been our view that the EU would behave like the political ideologues they are.

Significant backing for #GoWTO

MPs backing Go WTO    MEPs backing Go WTO    Pro-Brexit organisations backing Go WTO

In early January we received political support and now the #GoWTO campaign is :-

  • Headlined by four notable MPs
  • Backed by three notable MEPs
  • Endorsed by 15 pro-Brexit organisations
  • Used by large numbers of the public

Please note that #GoWTO has no connection with a campaign with a similar name which was launched after ours.

Getting the #GoWTO message out there

We were even given a donation by one public-spirited individual to include an element of paid social media advertising and have received many small donations from the public. The objective is to tell MPs in no uncertain terms :-

  • To respect democracy
  • Brexit must be delivered in full on 29 March
  • A World Trade Brexit is the way to go

Since then, there is no doubt that the campaign has had an impact. #GoWTO is now very widely used on social media and surveys are showing that this is now the preferred option of the general public.

Regrettably there are still hundreds of MPs who seem to think they will be forgiven for ignoring the largest democratic instruction in British history and giving us either a pantomime version of Brexit or no Brexit at all.

Forget arithmetic, defend democracy

Have you noticed the mood change about the second referendum – the Losers’ Vote? With everything that has been happening it’s easy to skip over but it's worth a minute’s thought.

It could have gone the other way and there’s always a reason why momentum changes. Reversals like this don't happen overnight. It’s a very slow and gradual process, almost invisible until the change comes to light.

If you are reading this article you may well have been a part of this process. Those of you who took - and are taking - an active part in our campaign have made a difference. Your letters, phone-calls, visits to your MPs - all the efforts you put in might just have tipped the balance.

And that's why we have to keep going whilst things are on the move. Keep the wheels turning!

These kind of changes never happen quickly or spectacularly. We need to be persistent, sustained and constant.

Please donate to our clean, World Trade Brexit, 'Go WTO' campaign
