Who is this other man?

And why does a “trading bloc” need a “genuine Defence Union”?

Yesterday a meeting took place at the HQ of the “European External Action Service” in Brussels. [More correctly the EU External Action Service.]

The host for this meeting was a man whom almost no-one in the UK will have heard of. His name is Josep Borrell Fontelles and he’s Spanish/Argentinian.

In July this year (2019) he acquired joint Argentinian-Spanish citizenship
On 1 Dec 2019 he became “EU Vice-President & High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy”
In effect he combines the roles of EU Foreign Secretary and EU Defence Secretary

Yesterday’s meeting with the NATO Secretary-General

In Brussels yesterday, Senor Borrell welcomed the NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg – a passionate Europhile – to the Headquarters of the EU External Action Service.

Whilst following the usual EU mantra of the European Union not intending to supplant NATO, merely to ‘supplement’ it, the EU’s new defence chief nevertheless said the following:

“We have to work together in order to reinforce cooperation between the Member States of the European Union and to build a genuine European Defence Union”

Observations

Josep Borrell now holds arguably the second most-powerful position in Brussels after that of the new EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen.

Almost no-one in the UK will have ever heard of him.

Senor Borrell will claim to have been elected to his position by the EU Parliament. In reality he was selected, and then presented to the MEPs as the only candidate.

They don't hide their aims anymore. To some of us this was always known to be the making of a socialist utopia and the death of European nation states.
To the majority of of people whilst we all fuss and fret over the GE, the powers that be are stripping away the nation state powers and making us defenceless, this has been going on for ages in the background so as not to be noticed.

Concerned, - "going on in the background so as not to be noticed". Yup. The other strategy/tactic the EU wields is "gradually, gradually so as not to be noticed". Fishing quotas leap to mind here - year by year, do a little something, which will gradually gradually kill off the UK's fishing fleet. And increasing federalisation.

The European Union is now at a decision point. The objectives with which it was launched and the logic of existing relationships have been keen to push it towards a full political union-some sort of United State of Europe, or at least of the Eurozone, confirming a move towards deeper integration, quite in tune with the thrust of the EU’s historical development and of the EU’s past success. But the EU is a malfunctioning construct for today’s world-and even more so for tomorrow’s. It needs either to undergo fundamental reform or to break up.
However the citizens of Europe are beginning to question the actions morality and direction of the European adventure. Examples of EU arrogance, over-regulation, secrecy and fraud to suggest that, we are ruled by an unaccountable incompetent, corrupt self-serving elite.
Could it be that we ( 27 nations) are possibly unwittingly ‘recreating the Soviet Union in western Europe.
If nothing changes and frankly it is unlikely to do so in its present shape, then the EU’s share of the world GDP is set to fall sharply and with it, Europe’s influence in the world. ...To the EU establishment that is exactly what integration is supposed to prevent. As a result it will become more and more unpopular, and as it is seen by many European citizens as a full political union which they do not want-hence why the United Kingdom voted to leave the Union. It is therefore questionable as to whether there is any benefit in furthering any negotiations with the European Union?

Given that the UK is still an EU member state at this point, and that the UK has dependent territories upon which Argentina continues to press territorial claims (the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands), is there not a glaringly obvious conflict of interest in this appointment?
Has the UK made any objection to the appointment of an Argentinian citizen to the post?
By contrast, do we expect that the French would accept the appointment to this position of someone who held Madagascan citizenship, or would they object on the grounds that Madagascar maintains territorial claims against various French-owned atolls and islets in the Indian Ocean?
