A Brexit Facts4EU.Org perspective on where we are

The weekend papers are full of even more damning commentaries, articles by MPs, mass letters of protest, and critiques of Mrs May’s latest hare-brained wheeze to delay Brexit again.

And what do our international friends think?

TBS (the Tokyo Broadcasting System) has a flagship programme which is their equivalent of Newsnight or Panorama. Last night they asked us if a film crew could follow the Brexit Facts4EU.Org team on one day next week.

As part of this, Japanese TV are wondering :-

“if you can explain the situation to our confused Japanese viewers?”

Well yes, we can certainly give our perspective on where we are, how we got here, and what is happening now. Whether this will leave Japanese TV viewers any less confused than they currently are is another question. We sympathise entirely with the Japanese people, and with the programme makers.

Many British people are equally confused. Not everyone follows political news each day. Some MPs might find it hard to believe, but many people just go about their daily lives, aware that Brexit is still dragging on but without the time nor the energy to follow all the twists and turns.

Many of these people will perk up when it seems there might actually be a denouement. And millions might then be very disappointed indeed. And very, very angry.

And what of those who are actually politically engaged?

Millions of people do follow politics, although they might not be quite as interested in the tiny details which obsess the chattering Westminster classes.

These are people who are now deeply worried, not only by the non-delivery of Brexit, but by the current precarious state of our democratic parliamentary system.

They can see the obvious. They can see that the appalling mess we’re now in has been caused in major part by anti-democratic MPs, elected on manifestos which they are flagrantly flounting, ignoring democracy and constitutional conventions in their desperate attempt to stop Brexit at all costs.

This of course is the real story. Democracy itself is heading for the Intensive Care Unit.

So what’s really going on?

The papers are full of stories of party membership cards being cut up last week, party activists refusing to go out and campaign for the local elections next month, and Cabinet Ministers and MPs being openly hostile towards each other.

Meanwhile, UKIP looks sure to impact heavily the votes for the two major parties in some parts of England and Wales in the local elections next month. If Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party weren’t so focused on the potential EU Parliament elections, they would surge to victory in a very large number of wards in the UK.

We can’t for the life of us understand why the Brexit Party didn’t seem to want to engage in quickly building a national network in readiness for the local elections and a General Election, but there we go. We’re not politicians, just people from the world of business who see things very simply.

Zen and the art of Brexit

We have always been party-neutral of course. Our main interest is in Brexit and the delivery thereof. We will view all players dispassionately through a Brexit lens.

The one thing we are sensing via our many thousands of readers is that a big shift in the political landscape is on the cards.

To put this in terms which a Japanese audience might appreciate, the sands of time are eroded by a river of constant change. The interesting question is whether a flash flood is now descending down the mountain, and what will be left when it has passed through?
