A VICTORY – AND IT WAS THE ORDINARY VOTER WOT WON IT

All four Remain proposals defeated, some by small margins

How public pressure matters at the margin

Every reader of Brexit Facts4EU.Org, and of other sites which also advocated in a similar way to us, should give themselves a big pat on the back today.

This was a victory for all those who wrote to their MP demanding that they respect the result of the Referendum and vote for a clean WTO World Trade Brexit.

Why every single one of you counts

Over the past nine months since we first started our public letter campaigns to MPs, the vast majority of readers agreed with this approach. However a small minority of readers have told us:

“Good idea, but there’s no point because it won’t change anything.”

Our response was that pressure across the board was required, to stop the relentlessly-growing confidence of the majority Remain political class.

We argued that even arch-Remoaner MPs needed to know the strength of feeling and increasing anger in the country at large, because it might make them row back from the most extreme positions. We also pointed out that the Remain campaigns are very well-funded and have been engaged in coordinated letter writing since the Referendum.

“MPs are only hearing from Remainers,” one MP told us.

Fortunately the majority of you agreed with our suggestions and many of you rose to the challenge.

Brexit Facts4EU.org Summary

We argued that it was essential :-

  • To support pro-Brexit MPs to stop them from wavering
  • To lobby the ‘soft middle’ to persuade them to vote for Brexit, and
  • To try to influence arch-Remoaner MPs away from voting for extreme Remain options.

It was close last night – two MPs switching would have meant we lost

Readers will know that the closest vote was for the Customs Union motion, as we predicted since Friday. In a very rare lapse, we called the result wrong. (And we will always admit if we're wrong.) We thought the Remain side just had the numbers to win this vote.

In the end, the motion was defeated by just three votes: 273 to 276. Had just TWO MPs voted the other way, the Customs Union (Remain) motion would have passed.

Whilst not legally binding, if the motion had passed we believe that arch-Remoaner Speaker Bercow would have changed the rules yet again to allow a vote tomorrow, (Wednesday), for a Bill to force the Government to adopt this policy.

As it was, the motion was very narrowly defeated.

Give yourselves a pat on the back

This was a victory for readers, where the smallest margins were involved.

Imagine if we had all sat back and done nothing, and allowed Remain campaigners to dominate the correspondence received by MPs? We think it perfectly possible that the efforts of our readers – and of other sites – made the difference.

Thank you all. Thank you to those who have sent letters and made calls to MPs, thank you to those who have made donations to enable us to struggle on, and thank you to all who have shown their support in emails to us.

You’re a splendid bunch, all the many thousands of you.

The fight continues

Before we all get complacent, we’re a long way from getting the Brexit we all voted for nearly three years ago. Now we must all step up a gear.

We’re exhausted, you’re exhausted, but we have to up our game. It’s working – very slowly – and now we must press the advantage. We will write more on this tomorrow.
