Brexit would not damage UK security

Richard Dearlove was the Head of MI6 until 2015. We have to assume he knows what he's talking about when it comes to the threat of foreign terrorism. This is what he wrote on Mar 23 for Prospect Magazine :-

1. "Britain is Europe’s leader in intelligence and security matters and gives much more than it gets in return."

2. "Brexit would bring two potentially important security gains: the ability to dump the European Convention on Human Rights — remember the difficulty of extraditing the extremist Abu Hamza of the Finsbury Park Mosque — and, more importantly, greater control over immigration from the European Union."

3. "If a security source in Germany learns that a terrorist attack is being planned in London, [their] domestic intelligence service is certainly not going to withhold the intelligence from MI5 simply because the UK is not an EU member.”

4. "...though the UK participates in various European and Brussels-based security bodies, they are of little consequence... little more than forums for the exchange of analysis and views."

5. "In short, Europe would be the potential losers in national security".

The Hidden EU Army and Our Security

1. Who will defend us in an increasingly integrationist EU future? Last year, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of EU Commission said: “The European Union needs its own army…. Such an army would help us design a common foreign and security policy.”

2. What he didn’t tell you is that the EU Army is already well on its way. The EU has created: the European External Action Service, the EU Institute for Security Studies, the European Defence Agency, the EU Military Committee, the EU Military Staff, the Eurocorps, and the EU Battle Groups. Discretely, the EU has been building everything it needs to run a combined military under the EU flag.

3. Even the BBC has said: “The European Union has quietly acquired what might be described as a standing army.”

4. The above is another example where the British people aren’t aware of what the EU is doing. Imagine our defence decisions being taken in Brussels. Imagine the defence of the UK in the hands of an Italian or German general. This is the clear and certain direction of travel if we stay in the EU.

5. Would you feel safer knowing our membership of NATO – which has guaranteed the peace for over 50 years - will definitely continue if we vote to leave the EU?

6. Would you feel safer knowing that our police and intelligence services will continue to have full cooperation with the EU after we leave?

7. Would you feel safer knowing that you’re being protected by our own Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Coastguard – all governed in the UK?

8. Would you feel financially more secure knowing that the UK’s growth rate is nearly double that of the Eurozone countries?

9. Would you feel safer knowing that the rest of the World, including the Commonwealth, is growing faster than the EU and if we leave we can do free trade deals with them?

10. Would you feel financially safer knowing that the UK continues to produce more new jobs than all the other Eurozone countries combined?

How do EU nations' security and police services help us?

1. The BBC's Security Correspondent, Frank Gardner, gave a frank assessment of one of our EU neighbours' policing and intelligence abilities.

2. "The Belgian police is very fragmented: they speak two different languages, there are six different forces spread across 19 boroughs in Brussels. It's not very connected, it's not very joined-up. This means that vital clues are missed," he said.

3. The Federal Police answer to six governments and it includes 50 separate directorates, including traffic, railway, waterway, airport, air support and dog police.

4. The local police service comprises 196 police forces constituted from the former communal and gendarmerie brigade, working under the mayor of the municipalities.

5. Around 50 police forces cover the territory of one municipality or city zone.

Strangely, Mr Cameron thinks we're safer being part of the EU...
